If I'm riding 8.4 miles in 30 minutes on a recumbent style stationary bike, what sort of effort is that? Moderate? Vigorous? I guess, on average, I'm going 16 mph.

Resistance level also comes into play, as well as your fitness level, so I don't think there's a way to answer that.

I have a recumbent bike, and I sweat up a rainstorm on it. According to my HRM, my calorie burn on the recumbent bike is equivalent to MFP's "moderate effort" cycling. It may be different for you though.

Hmmmm... Well, I do hills, resistance level 1-6, 3 times and a warm up + cool down (programmed workout on my bike). I'm not entirely sure what my fitness level is, probably intermediate. I don't know if this helps any.
