Hey! New to the site and thought I would try the community board
I'm going to sushi tonight with some girlfirends - normally when we go we just share a bunch of rolls but honestly, I have no idea what a "healthy" amount of sushi is to eat. If I was on my own I would get 1 "special" roll, 1 tuna roll, and a small salad but even that seems like a lot of calories given the 1340 I'm alotted for the day.
What do you usually order at a sushi restaurant? I know sashimi is an option but I usually end up craving carbs later.

I would order a veggie roll, inari, and a bowl of edamame.0

we try to stick to the tuna rolls and stay away from any tempura. We also opt for the tuna over salmon. Some places will let you get brown rice instead of white which helps a bit too.
Enjoy!!0 -
I usually order a cucumber roll or a chicken teriyaki roll.0

Cucumber roll, or even the California roll is fine. Watch out for the sodium in the soy sauce though. Great...now I want some.0

I LOVE sushi and really struggly to log it so I am curious how others do.0

Basically, IMO, as long as you stay under about 10 slices, you should be fine. Stick with the options that are heavy on fish and don't have a lot of extra stuff in them unless it's veggies.
And the calamari is pretty unhealthy... but you probably knew that.
But the bottom line is that Sushi is a pretty healthy meal, as long as you don't gorge yourself you should be fine. It's not low cal, but healthy. The main thing going to be adding calories is the rice, so if you're watching carbs be careful.0 -

I actually took some home, broke it down into the pieces, weighed it, then added it as a food on here, but it's Sushiland sushi, so it is a little smaller portions than most Sushi places.0 -
I usually have the sashimi and some edamame to keep my carbs down. If I am having a roll, I limit my portion to the equivalent to one roll and of course stay away from the tempura. My problem is the soy sauce and wasabi. I LOVE that stuff!!!0

Eventhough MFP has some sushi in their data base, I also found this website.

I LOVE sushi, and I could easily eat three rolls by myself ( as I so often do) but what I usually do if I am wanting a higher calorie one is start off with some Miso soup, then just get the simple salmon or tuna roll, california roll, then whatever other roll I want. But yes stay away from tempura! Even though it's oh so delicious!0 -
I'm a horrible person to ask because i'm a sushi ADDICT. I eat way too much of it (when i do)
I just wanted to come in here and drop my two cents and tell the world that i love all things sushi
and now i want some. damn you.0 -
I find that most rolls are between 250-350 calories for the entire thing, plus lots of protein. This excludes any of those crazy rolls that have cream cheese, are fried, or have any other obvious fatty component to them...I am talking about your regular type rolls. My favorites are Unagi (eel), tuna, salmon, and I am a sucker for any sort of avocado roll (healthy fat!). You can still share with friends- just keep in mind how many pieces equal a whole roll and don't eat more than what you intend.0

This should help out, Its not all the rolls but gives you a good idea.

Thanks for all the replies! I think my biggest problem is that when I go out with 2-3 girls they always want to order a few "fancy" rolls - last Monday I was able to get everyone to agree nothing fried (ie. no tempura rolls) so the worst were spicy and avocado. Plus I skipped the sake and cocktails and opted for just green tea...we're going again tonight but it's just 2 of us so I'm going to try to pull for sashimi for 2.
Is it just me or does it seem totally impossible to find any nutrition facts/calorie counts for fancy or "special" rolls?0
