Hey everyone,
It's my 4 year anniversary on Wednesday and we've decided to go out for a curry. I know..who said romance is dead!

I have one naughty day per week so I've planned it for that day so I'm not going to worry or cry when I update my food diary! (That happened ONCE, okay?! hehe jk) - I plan to enjoy myself and I'm really looking forward to a big fat garlic naan bread. I have definitely earned it and well..it's a special occasion.

I'm not a fan of spicy food. My other half once ordered me a madras when I had a cold to "help clear my nose" - yeah right! I thought I was going to die. Food isn't supposed to hurt!! My favourite dish is chicken mughlai - I just found out that it's more commonly known as BUTTER CHICKEN and that name alone is threatening to bring me out in hives right now ha ha ha!! Anyone have any ideas how many calories I'd be eating if I had one of those? I know it's my treat day but I don't want to be a baddie just for the sake of it.

The menu is available here - http://www.massalaboro.co.uk/menu.pdf

What would you choose if you were trying to be good?
..and what would you choose if you were treating yourself?

I would choose which food looked absolutely the best and enjoy every bite of it. If it was an often thing, then yeah, I would be careful, but an anniversary celebration. I wouldn't even sweat it.

    Hey Witchy!
It's our 10 year wedding anniversary on Wednesday too! <3 We haven't planned anything yet!

I think the best thing to eat is plain old chicken tikka - that's all my hubby ever has when we go for Indian food, he loves it. No sauce but nice flavour. Other than that, tomato based sauces rather than cream based ones - jalfrezi, bhuna possibly? I'm not really sure ... eat as little sauce as possible, avoid the rice, and no onion bhajis!

But aside from all that, just enjoy :D

Tandoori is typically safer, as it's oven-baked. Try the "Search" link just above your post to search for other posts on Indian food.

Oh... and have a great time!

You nailed it with Indian food.

My birthday is coming up in August and I am planning it as my first "cheat" day in over eight months. I will have lost (hopefully) over 100 pounds by that time, so I am going to try and be careful but still enjoy myself. I am going to get up and go for a ten mile run (maybe more, we'll see if I can push it to a half marathon) and then my sweetie and I are going to drive to the "big city" (we live in the sticks) and eat at a wonderful little Indian place.

    My (our) choices:

Mixed vegetarian starter (samosa, pakora, cucumber salad & moong dal) for two

Garlic Naan & Whole wheat roti

Baingan Bharta (tandori roasted eggplant and fresh pea curry) so hot it could melt your fillings

Malai Kofta (a vegetable "meatball" in a spicy-sweet cream curry sauce, this is the decadent one)

    Brown basmati rice

Lots of yogurt raita and spicy chutneys

    Ice cold Indian beer

Thanks for the link to the menu! I love looking, even if I can't "touch". Have a wonderful time and enjoy every minute of it.
  • OMG this thread is making me hungry! :)

I would just eat a little bit of everything and not sweat it. Make up for it during the rest of the week. I am learning it's what you do the majority of the time that determines what your results will be and not what you do once in a while. An anniversary is a special occasion, you shouldn't worry too much.

That being said, butter chicken is my FAV and if I was in my fav Indian restaurant, I would feel ripped off if I didn't have some.

    Congrats!

Shoot! Didn't see the what would you choose if you were trying to be good part. Apologies.

I would stick with grilled items if you are trying to stay within a certain fat & calorie range. I would just make sure to ask about whether they brush the kebabs with butter or oil and asking them to leave that off or keep it to a minimum) if they do. The mint and tamarind chutneys make great additions, add a lot of flavor and are usually fat free.

Dal & other Indian soups are usually pretty healthy, but I would ask about butter & cream just in case. You can also ask if they substitute brown rice for white or even if they will substitute something like a cucumber and tomato salad instead of rice.

It looks like they have green salads, too, which are always a great way to start and can help to minimize overeating.

    Have a great time!

You can try tandoori roti(you can ask for a garlic tandoori roti) which is made of wheat flour, naan is made of maida(which is a lot higher in calories).

Chicken tikka(dry) which come under kebabs are grilled with spices smeared over. The gravies like butter chicken are heavy gravies with oil and cashew paste etc.

I generally choose kebabs with tandoori roti. but have these gravies also once in awhile. I would say having all this once in a while is completely acceptable.

Thank you for all the well wishes and yummy sounding suggestions everyone!

In the end, I went for the butter chicken with a garlic naan like I itended to. Well worth it. I even had onion bhajis with salad and onion raita for my starter. It was wonderful!

I went preeeetty far over my daily goal but what the hell..it *was* a special occasion.
