A runner's NSV - a new 10K PR!!

On Sunday I ran a 10K race with the goal of achieving a new personal record. This was the 3rd year in a row I have run this race so I knew what to expect with the course and everything. I was chasing my 2009 time of 58:49 and was hoping to get under 58:00. In the last few weeks as I was training for this race, my best run was 57:35 so I had high hopes of actually making it. What I didn't know was that I would blow my best 10K time out of the water by nearly 4 minutes!!

My official finish time was 54:52, an astonishing (for me) average pace of 8:51/mile! And I am about 2 pounds heavier now than when I ran in 2009 (14 lbs lighter than 2010, though!) but in much better running shape. I can't wait to see how fast I can run a 10K when i lose 20 more pounds and reach my goal weight!!

ETA: My profile pic is of me crossing the finish line! My wife got a great shot of me with my official finish time on the clock.

Nice job! It looks like 54:52 is your gun time, what was your chip (or watch) time? Or perhaps you started at the very front.

Great job! I've read that every extra pound you carry adds 2 seconds to your time. So just by getting lighter your time should still improve. Congrats on the PR!

Well done! I don't find losing weight makes me faster tbh, but that's a big chunk off your PB, you must be pleased.

It was a small race (only 142 participants) so i started near the front on the side. So the 54:52 was my chip time, too.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I am still in awe that I was able to keep that pace for the whole race.
