Steel Cut Oats

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but what exactly are steel cut oats? What brand are they?

There are a few different brands. It is how the oats are processed, as opposed to say, instant oats, which are finely ground to cook more quickly.

They are a differet portion of the oat, and they are coarser. They take a but longer to cook. Just a different consistency I guess. They are sometimes called Irish oats. Leess processed

Steel cut oats are not rolled like typical oatmeal, but cut with steel blades into small pieces. This type of oatmeal takes longer to cook but the nutritional value is worth the extra time. There are many brands: check out Bob's Red Mill; this brand is easy to find in most grocery stores.

This video is actually a pretty good explanation, and pretty humorous, too! Alton Brown has a couple really good recipes with oats--I make his Steel Cut Oatmeal a lot--now I can't stand the instant stuff!

Mccans is a pretty common brand of steel cut oats.I usually bought mine in the bulk food section at the grocery store.
If your going to be eating steal cut oats they can be a pain to cook sometimes. You can add water to the oats an set out over night. I didn't like to do that so o would usually boil the water add oats cover with lid and let set then keep in fridge for a few days:)
