What is the purpose/benefit of using a pedometer?

I really want to get an HRM, but have to wait due to the cost and it not fitting my summer budget right now (too many birthdays/vacation, etc.) So I picked up a cheap pedometer over the weekend since it supposedly counts calories burned. However, I'm pretty sure it's not accurate since it doesn't take the actual exertion into account.
So how exactly can a pedometer help me with getting in shape? How do I use it to help me? I get that it counts my steps and was surprised to see that I actually walked a mile just cleaning up my house. But, I'm not sure how I should be using it until I get my HRM.

For me, it helps me get more activity in. I set step goals. I wouldn't use it for calorie burn though.0
