I WANT to work out more, but....

.,..for some reason even if I have a whole day to myself, just sitting around, and motivation to work out, and it's noon, and I have a workout class scheduled at the gym at 7 pm, I won't work out all day, only at that class. This seemed logical, to conserve my energy all day, until I joined this site and began seeing that people can spend over an hour engaging in intense physical activity daily and still be fine! I WANT to burn 1000+ calories a day, I'm not out of shape, and I do have time, but I'm afraid that it will drain all my energy for the following workout?

Hope this makes sense :)

Thanks in advance for reading and replying!

Your body can do a whole lot more than your mind lets you think it can. You've just got to push it and see where your limits are. Make sure its your body telling you its tired and not your brain rationalizing that it SHOULD be tired.

That said, when you're comparing your calorie burn to others make sure they're around the same weight as you. A 200 lb dude is going to burn 1000 cals a LOT faster/easier than a 150 lb woman.

I do not burn 1000 calories. I have lost 20 lbs (from 145 to 124.8) by working out 5-6 days a week for like 20-30 min. I only burn 130-300 and I have still lost weight. As long as you are losing weight, and eating correctly, dont worry about other people's calorie burns.

I say if you are motivated to work out- do it! I usually have to force myself to, so I'm a little jealous! Can I have some of your motivation? haha

though I have felt similarly to you on occasion, but mostly it happens that I've already worked out and have several hours of down time and I'm just sitting on my *kitten* thinking... shouldn't I be moving? But then I remember- I already did!

What I've been doing lately, though, is doing my regularly scheduled workout and then AFTER if I feel up for it, I go for a walk for an hour or two. I hate running so having worked out beforehand makes for a nice excuse to be "lazy" and walk.

    good luck!

As long as you have a pretty decent amount of time to recover in between you should be fine. Us young people can handle more exercise!! (Not sure if that's a scientific fact but oh well! :P) I have been working out like twice a day and I feel great!

I DON'T exercise and I've lost 36lbs so far.. Don't worry about how much you burn because it's not "required" to lose weight. If you're working out to be more toned and fit, then listen to your body and push it as hard as you can. The calorie burn doesn't matter as much as the exercises themselves, and how hard you push yourself.

If you want to do it - go ahead and do it but because you want to and not because others seem to burn more calories than you.

What others have said is totally true re weight and calorie burning. When I was 225lbs I would burn 1000cals in about 45 - 50 minutes of running much slower than I run now. Now it takes 70 - 75 minutes of much faster running. Sucks! Mind you, it does seem to take fewer cals to make a difference on the scales now so maybe it's swings and roundabouts!

Ok, I do on average about 1 hour and 30 minutes (at most 2 hours) of high-intensity exercising on an average day. I do my workouts RIGHT before work, so I get to the gym around 7 to give myself a decent 2 hour period (I start at 9). If anything, exercising in the morning gives me more energy throughout the day. I would advise to give the early morning a work to see what you like best. By the way, I haven't been able to burn 1000 calories on a good day. The most I've done is like.. 760 or something like that.
Tuesday's are my only exception, instead of lifting I just go running for an hour. Doing stuff in the evening makes me lazier and not want to do stuff in the morning.

It's really hard to get there, but once I'm outside walking/in the gym/ doing whatever I'm doing to work out I feel like I have so much MORE energy!

That said, it's important to know your limits. Like people have already said, if you're a smaller person to start with you may have a tough time burning thousands of calories. If that's unrealistic for you, don't make it your goal.

I would suggest that one day when you're feeling like you could go out and get a workout done, really push yourself! See what your max level is and then go from there. :)

Also! Have you ever tried using an elliptical machine?? I burn more calories on that thing than any other machine/routine I've ever done!! Its great!

I actually have more energy if I exercise more... don't know why/how but I do! I usually do a bit of cardio/strength in the morning (about 30 minutes) and then go for a long bike ride at night.

One thing you can do if you don't think you will have enough energy if you workout in the day is just go for a walk . You would be surprised at how much walking can help you lose weight.

I would start with just walking first anyways and when you get use to that I would move on to something a little be harder and work your way up to working out twice a day.

A few years ago before my divorce I was blessed to have a gym membership and I had a trainer for a few weeks. I was 220lbs starting out and out of shape. But I worked with the trainer 2 hours a week, and started spinning and shortly after I added in the couch to 5K program. So I would run, spin and sometimes work with my trainer all on the same day. You just have to get used to it and work your way up to it. Go to the gym 15 minutes early and do a little work before class, then a little earlier the next time. Or later. It was addictive, I wish I could devote that much time to exercise now. Do it while you have the time :)

PHEW, okay! Thanks guys, I'll be sure to allow myself more than one workout per day if I don't actually feel fatigued physically, thanks!! :D Guess I just needed that extra push. I don't want to hurt myself, nobody does :)

Make sure you stretch good and warm up before all of your workouts. If you're going to be doing any additional exercises do cardio and try to not work your muscles TOO much. So don't lift weights in the morning and then lift weights at night.

I'm a fan of shorter, super intense cardio workouts. I either do my own thing or do an Insanity DVD.
  • Your body is a MACHINE. You can do a LOT more than what you think. Do you think people used to just nap all day if they had to spend an hour running around and hunting? Silly analogy, I know, but true.

I frequently work out for 3-4 hours on a normal 1500 calorie diet. ..
