Help!..in pain

I have been running 3-4 miles at least 5 days a week for several months now, and over the past few days I have developed pain approx 4 in up from my ankle. It is on the very edge of my shin bone, localized to an area about the size of a small lemon. When at rest the pain is still there even with motrin. Being a HS and college athlete i have had shin splints before, and this feels different, the pain does not encompass the whole shin. There is a little edema at the area but no terrible I have iced and heated. I would not say the pain is unbearable at rest but I am in constant reminder that there is pain.
I ran today and the pain is restricting my distance and speed. I was able to run 3.5 miles and i walked another mile but it was hurting pretty bad at the end. The area is so tender that if one of my kids bumps it or if accidentally bump it on something, I want to cry.
i did have complete fulgerson procedure done 10 years ago so I have a shorter stride that the average runner with a slight running limp on the opposite leg however this has not really affected my running. i do not want to stop my exercise regimen so I am looking for help Has anyone experienced this, and if so how did you deal..
thanks

Do you do anything that increases your risk for deep vein thrombosis (i.e. birth control, eat a lot of food w/ vitamin K)? Just a thought, since there is pain at rest and edema. Most likely that isn't it, if you've been an athelete, I would think your cardiovascular system would be good, but just a thought (since you don't think it is shin splints)0

You should go to a sports medicine specialist and get that checked. I was having some pain in my leg (unfortunately different from yours). I went to my PCP and she told me I had to take four weeks off from running. I went to a specialist and he, among other things, told me that running was "medicine" and I should continue to run while I treat. Get it checked now, though, in case it's something serious and you end up having to take months off to heal. Good luck!0
