You need to take off the HRM when you are done working out, and here is why:

You burn X amount of calories if you sit on your butt all day. Your heart rate monitor tracks how many calories you are burning while you are working out. If you add those exercise calories to MFP, which already takes your BMR (the X calories you'd burn just sitting on your butt) into account, you end up with a higher number of calories than you actually burned. If you leave the HRM on for even longer, that difference gets even bigger. If you then eat all of your exercise calories back, you are actually eating more than you burned which will hamper your weight loss progress.

Great question! I also wondered the same thing. What I do when I put on my HRM is check the reading usually about 72-80 after moving around, getting my biking gear on, walking out of garage etc. After I complete my ride & stopped, my HRM is reading 110-120 so I let it continue until it's back down to about 80 or so which can take additional 5-10 minutes then stop it. According to my HRM my resting Heart Rate is about 59-60 so letting the HRM continue till it Reads what I started out with makes sense to me.

I usually stop mine right after working out, beacuse your body can burn up to an hour later with cardio workout and if weight lifting it burns even longer.
