Avocados - Do or Don't?

Ok, need some advice, are avocados a staple in your diet? Or do you try to avoid? I know they're higher in calories and fat, but they're low in carbs and high in fiber. Does the good outweigh the bad? And the fats are the healthy ones, right?

I'm type 2 diabetic and the low carbs and high fiber is a definite plus for me. Just trying to get a feel for what others' experiences are with them.

And how do you eat them, raw and plain? In salads, guac, etc?

avacados are great way to include the right fats in your diet.
you can cut them up in slices and put it on a turkey sandwich plain or you can mash them up and make guacamole.

a typical serving size of an avacado is 1/4 of it. just dont eat the whole avacado in one sitting :)

Do! They are a good, healthy fat -- the type your body needs. I put them on Boca tacos and in salads. DH is always making guacamole, so we almost always have them in the house. =)

I love and eat avacados. It has helped tremendously with my blood sugar results, and believe it or not, I have lost weight eating them. One every 4 days. Plain avacado on multi-grain bread is great as a sandwich, and add jalepenos for extra punch!!

    Do!!

My favorite way? Cut in half & chuck a little Newman's olive oil & vinegar in the middle and eat with a spoon. Or even just a little salt and pepper.

They are my 'cheese' substitute on sandwiches & burgers or in a fajita or mashed up and used as a dip. A GREAT healthy fat. Geez...I need to go to lunch now.

I absolutely LOVE them! I use a half an avocado and mix it in with tuna fish instead of mayo. I also cut it up into cubes and make a stir fry with them, adding garlic, onions, kale, and eggplant. When I have the rare cold cut sandwich, I mash it up and spread it on the bread instead of mayo. I even use them sliced up and inside wraps.

I definitely indulge in avocado but it's not a staple. It depends on the price. I like to mix into home made salsas and eat wtih multigrain chips or put into burritos/tacos. Or sliced in sandwiches and burgers. I also like to halve and scoop out and eat with some aji pon (seasoned soy sauce) drizzled on top.

I grew up eating avocado on lightly buttered (now) toast with salt and pepper (mashed with a fork). Still one of my favorite breakfasts! Guacamole is a great way to have them - add chopped tomatoes and a small can of green chilies (not hot - just flavorful).

LOVE AVOCADO! Like anything else, taken in moderation isn't a bad thing! They add so much flavor to sandwiches and are a lot healthier than just about any other condiment you may use. I say use them, enjoy them, just don't over do it.
  • Its a do... but only if it keeps you within your daily cal goals
  • Avocados are a "YES!" You're right that they're loaded with good fat, but also high in calories. No matter how you break it down losing/maintaining/gaining weight is all about how many calories you take vs. how many you use. The closer a food is to it's source the more nutritious it is. So enjoy the wonderful, creamy, goodness of those avocados without worry. Just be sure to maintain your caloric deficit. Mmmmmm. My mouth is watering just thinking about avocados...

Thanks everybody for your input! Sounds like a winner!!! :)

They're a little pricey, but if you get 4 servings out of one, that's pretty darn good! I love all your recipe suggestions, I may try mixing it in with tuna for lunch tomorrow, YUM-O! :)

I eat half an avocado all the time, never messed with my sugar counts either.

    Mixed with tuna sounds great!

Just for the record, had half a small avocado with my sandwich at lunch. More calories than fat free miracle whip...but so much tastier!

Big time do! I eat one or half of one depending on the size nearly every day. It's definitely a good fat and worth every calorie. Avocado added to your salad increases your body's absorption of nutrients from other veg in the salad.

I have 1/2 an avocado in my dinner salad pretty much every night! I love avo so much :) I just don't put any olive oil in and just use straight balsamic for a dressing, so I figure the fat is balanced out.
