I do karate twice a week. For a 90 minute martial arts session MFP gives me an additional 1269 calories and for my 120 minute session it gives me an additional 1669 - these all seem very high.... any ideas???

get a HRM. This way you can get an accurate calorie burn per workout

Yes a heart rate monitor is the best way to measure how much effort you are putting in. I personally found when I did martial arts that I wasn't working as hard as the system assumed because you aren't constantly kicking and punching for the entire class (in fact in my class we did a lot of standing around watching the instructors). For me it's the same with Spin - I am not "vigorously cycling" for the ENTIRE 45 min class.
