My husband and I are planning a trip to NYC from southern Maryland next weekend. Does anyone have any tips on parking garages? We would like to park outside the city if possible so we don't have to fight traffic and we'll just walk or take a cab or subway around town once we're there. Our hotel is in Lower Manhattan so some where that's somewhat near there would be nice.

Look near Jersey City or Hoboken. You can take the Path train to the WTC stop.

Thanks! I'm going to look into that. That train seems like the cheapest route so far. I'm just so nervous about driving anywhere near the city. Haha!

I always come up from MD/Philly and you can take really cheap & easy chinatown buses that take you directly into Manhattan if you don't want to deal with gas or parking. Also, if you want to drive there are HUGE parking garages at Metropark where you can hop on the NJT and it will take you into Penn Station. I'm partial to getting on at Princeton Junction, but that's just because it's a lot closer to me. Good luck!

Also, street parking in certain areas is free in NYC, but you have to check street cleaning hours and it may not be close to where you are staying.

I agree about the Chinese bus. I took it from DE and it was $35 round trip. Much cheaper than Amtrak or Greyhound. I don't think it would be much more from MD. The parking garage my hotel recommended was $35 per day and we still would have paid for gas and tolls...no thanks.

check the Hotel...."some" will have parking available right at the hotel. If you are looking to park the car overnight that may be difficult outside of the city... If you are looking for Day Trips into the city the Jersey City/Hoboken thing may work. It may even be less expensive to Rent a car drive it to NYC then leave it and rent one for the trip home. That way you dont pay parking fees.... Just check as some rental car companies dont like that...

Another way around it is to park your car at the Long Term parking in a NYC airport or hotel at the airport... You then take a Free shuttle to the terminal and then pay for a cab to your hotel...

If you have to park in NYC get ready to pay a premium... I worked in NYC for 12 years...luckly my job had a lot to park employee cars but I saw the fees.... OUCH

Just some Ideas... Dont worry the driving is not that bad...

Wow! Lots of options to toss around! We live about 1.5hrs south of DC so we'd have to drive our car there and park it somewhere to catch a bus from there. I looked online and saw quite a few parking garages in Jersey City and it'd be really close to the PATH train mentioned above. That'll get us to the WTC area, which is about 3/4 mile from our hotel. I don't know how much parking is at that garage yet though. I have to call and find out. Our hotel is like $55/day or something like that for parking. No thank you! haha! I'll check into the rental car thing too.

    Thanks everyone!

Is there a specific bus company you use? Do you know their website?

I have used bolt bus, mega bus, eastern bus company and I know that vamoose bus company stops at two places in VA. Some of the others might too, I would just do a quick google search because they all pop up. Sometimes you can get 1 dollar tickets (like i did last weekend!).

Thanks for this tip!! We parked in Jersey City for $20/day and the PATH train was $1.75 over to NYC. :)

Had a BLAST!!! The hub and I ate WAY too much, but it was worth it. Walked about 5-6 hours everyday so I don't feel too guilty about all the extra calories. :)

There are a couple parking open garages along West and East Houston Street between 6th and Bowery that are $10/night flat fee. Driving in the city is no big deal so I'd park closer to your hotel.
