So I've posted a few topics before but here's my story I am a competitive figure skater and I skate on average 4 hours a day 5 days a week. I have been having shoulder pain for a few weeks now and found out on Tuesday I have tendinitis in my rotator cuff and a labrum tear. I have been using ice and heat as instructed by my doctor and trying to take it easy with the exercise but cutting back on my skating training is hard to do. Has anyone else had or currently have a shoulder injury. What are you doing to treat it? Is there any way I can tape my shoulder while I'm skating? Thanks for the help : (

I tore up my shoulder doing chin ups of all things but a regime of ibuprophen seems to help along with rest, I just tried not to use it al all. Its tough when something sidelines ya, but sometimes a break is a time to refocus.

Here is a video of my daughter skating this winter, please let me know what you think, we are on the verge of helping her take her skating to a new level. We know she loves it and her coaches tell us she is a natural.

I have a rotator cuff injury... My friend damaged it when he was giving me a backrub in highschool... the pain comes and goes still... and when it flares up I find that stretching... like yoga and stuff can be really really great.

I've had a shoulder injury from water polo and I've never really done anything for it since I can't afford it. But I have found that ice works wonders and (when I remember) I wear Kinesio Tape. That stuff is awesome and it's not like other tape. It stretches and allows for the full range of motion while giving support. It's also great because it can last for up to 5 days in and out of water.

Thanks...I think I'm gonna try that tape that's exactly what I need. Everything else is restricting!

I also had a labrum tear. In physical therapy I did some controled stretches using a resistance band or walking up a small ladder with my fingers and holding the highest ring I could reach for 10 seconds. They also told me to fill a dixie cup with water and freeze it, when it is ice cut out the bottom and use it to massage the area. The ice will numb it as you're massaging it.
I also did arm exercises with 2 lb weights lifting them straight in front and on the side with thumbs up.
I worked my way up from there.

    Good Luck!

Also, if you have not already, make sure to see an orthopedist, not just a general doctor. I had a dr. who would do my sports physicals and never recognized how bad my shoulders were. When I went to my high school-run physicals day I somehow got a volunteer orthopedist and when he got to my shoulders he made me call my parents. My shoulders were so "loose" that he was able to basically dislocate my shoulders and move them in and out of place (which was very painful afterwards). He then suggested me to see another orthopedist and I did. sadly I never sought an mri back then like I should have. I did go to physical therapy for a couple months after that while I was playing water polo and my shoulders got much better and stronger.
One of the most important things I was told was that the rotator cuff does need strengthening. It is composed of very small muscles so very light weight should be used and it is important to at least do some maintenance a couple times a week. Just 10 mins or so of using a stretch band while your warming up for your training could probably make a huge difference. But keep in mind since the muscles are so small they exhaust easily.

I had a right rotator cuff tear and tendenopothy in the left shoulder. I had both repaired with surgery. Ice, ibuprofen and rest will help, but it may take quite a while. You need to talk to your ortho about the tear though. Sometimes ice and rest is good enough, but for an athlete it might not be.

A few years ago I had "frozen shoulder" in my left shoulder.. several months of rehab did not help and I wound up having Manipulation Under Anesthsia .. can you say OUCH .. followed by several months more of rehab and again. I still have some range of motion issues but the exercise does help. A couple of months ago, I started with right shoulder pain This time however, I know it isn't the same because it hasn't progressed the same way. Yesterday I was at my RA doctor - she gave me a cortisone shot but we aren't sure it is going to help because we both think it is either Impingment or Rotator Cuff tear/injury. I have to get an Xray before imaging to see next steps. I am being careful with my weight training exercises .,, and I use Celebrex when I really need some relief.
