My cousin's wedding reception

My cousin's wedding & reception is tomorrow and I am terrified. I have no idea what type/style of food is being served (sit down or buffet). And I don't want to look weird and not eat anything. I can see it now, one of my Aunt's giving me the "you got to eat something baby" speech. Any suggesstions of how I can make it through the wedding reception...

Also, I did RSVP for the wedding, so I can't just bail on the reception.

If you see salad and veggies, definitely eat them. Anything else, eat only half of what you are served. And drink plenty of water!

I would say just get a small plate and get a little bit of everything. If they have grilled chicken, that would be my choice. Drink plenty of water, and stack up on the fruits n veggies..Enjoy it and have fun!!!

Also, you can burn off whatever you eat if you are brave enough to dance it off! My friend's wedding reception had 1 small salad and then fried chicken, mashed potatoes, carrot sticks, pickles, and green beans. I loaded up on carrots and green beans, had a little bit of potatoes and chicken and then danced my butt off!

exercise a lot before the wedding, drink a lot of water and eat something just before you go out
Then at the wedding eat things that you know are good for you, and remember that you have to log everything afterwards :) That way even psychologically you won't want to eat the bad stuff :P

Have fun and enjoy yourself!! Its supposed to be a fun time, not a stressful one. If you need too, try and get in a workout to get some more calories for the day. You will also be dancing the night away!! That will burn some of that food away!! :drinker:

I agree - Have Fun! Don't stress over it too much. Eat whatever you want in moderation. Yes, even the cake! One piece isn't going to make or break you. In the long run, even if you pig out and eat 2000 calories in one meal, it's not going to matter.

What does matter is feeling confident and proud of what you've accomplished and enjoying your day, and thereby, your LIFE, cuz isn't that what it's all about?

CONGRATS on your success and HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'd take the day off of logging too. You know what's good for you and what's not and what you should be eating less of. If you're worrying about measuring it all in your head and remembering every tidbit so you can log it, you're not going to be living in the moment and enjoying yourself. Just go for it! If you feel you have to log something, quick add 1000 calories for the reception, then put it out of your head and ENJOY!

I agree with both of these! While the weight loss is important, you can't let it rule your entire life in such a way that it completely ruins any occasion in your mind. I also agree with the dancing one! If you go a little over on food or drinks...dance it off! dancing is amazing cardio :D Also keep in mind that this is a special event...if you go a little overboard it's not that big of a deal because you know you don't do it all the time - just hop back on track the next day and you should be fine. Everyone deserves a cheat day here and there and what better reason could you have than a family wedding?

Living your life being afraid of events such as weddings/parties/work socials because of the food, is NO WAY TO LIVE, you have to learn that balance, one day wont set you back, just eat moderately and enjoy.

I would say to eat at your maintainence, this will give you a buffer, you wont gain you wont lose. but you will have fun.
  • I would see what your maintenance calories would be and then keep that in the back of your mind but seriously ENJOY YOURSELF!!! Don't go bat **** crazy and eat 10 pieces of cake, 5 servings of meat, and a crap load of sides but let yourself enjoy the food in moderation (even if you know it isn't the healthiest choice). It takes a lot to gain pound of fat. You literally have to eat your maintenance calories + 3500 extra calories + any calories you burn off just by dancing and making your social rounds. Opt to stay away from alcoholic drinks (maybe just one glass of champagne) and choose water over pop. You will be ok. Its your cousin's wedding, it is not something that happens all the time. Don't let calories and your weight be on your mind and enjoy the moment :)

PS: Don't weigh yourself for at least 3 days after and if you do know that you probably didn't gain any weight from fat but probably just bloat from sodium and sugar. Just drink water like crazy, til you just can't take any more and you should be back to where you were. Also - this is not a promise but a good possibility - if you have been very good about staying under your calorie goal the one day of going over what you normally eat could confuse your metabolism enough that you may even see an extra .5-1 lb loss at your next weigh in :) This has happened to me before several times. So who knows. Again that is no guarantee but stranger things have happened :)

Thank you all so much for all your posts. I am taking them all to heart. I think I freaked about about the wedding reception because I have been in a plateau phase and I finally got over it. Weekend weight gain is sometimes my down fall, but lately I have been getting better with not gaining over the weekend.

But thanks to your replies, I am going to just enjoy the wedding and make the best choices I can make with what is provided. And if I do go a little over board, that just mean, I will have to go a little harder on my workout.

I almost allowed my fear of the reception to cause me to forget about that fact that the last time I was at a wedding, I was wearing a 26W, but the dress I am wearing tomorrow is a 20W.

    AGAIN...THANKS ALOT MFP!!
  • Well then you go and rock that sexy slimmer dress!!!!! Yay for you!!! :drinker: :flowerforyou:

    Have tons of fun!!
