job advice?

so i'm a new nurse & i am going to be teaching kindergarten this fall, besides a temp nursing job... in the mean time i've been looking for a summer position & was just offered one as a camp nurse, pays great & ideal because it is just 6 weeks of the summer... problem is, they just sent me the paperwork & since i'd be an independent contractor, they said that i won't have taxes taken out & will need to do that myself when i file my taxes... well that sounds complicated & my mom is advising against taking the job because if i do that, as a single person, i'm looking at paying a ton in taxes...? i'm not sure that my mom knows what she is talking about & i could always hire some one to do my taxes for me next year if it is all that complicated, so what i'm trying to ask is if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing & if i should just avoid it?

i think your mom might be right...if they dont take out taxes that means at the end of the year your going to have to pay and depending on how much you would be making that could be quite a bit which could be hard to pay if you already spent the money. personally i like having mine taken out immediately that way theres no chance i wont be able to pay when taxes are due.0

i'm concerned because i'd have to take out my own malpractice & they aren't covering me workman's comp or anything if i were to get injured on the job. it just sounds like more of a mess than i want to deal with.0

You're not going to pay more in taxes than you're going to make at this job, though. I don't know what you make, but you can find out, percentage-wise, about how much your taxes would be (25% or something. Ugh, lol). Then, if I were you, I'd just set aside that amount of your paycheck into an interest bearing account and not touch it. That way you won't be hit super hard at tax season, since it would be (roughly) like they took it out all along. Plus you get the interest on it.0

There are probably better summer camps out there that will hire you as a real employee. I worked at one in Vermont and it was a blast and I was paid mega bucks. My mom worked at one out in Eastern Pa and she was the camp nurse, she was paid very well too and treated as any other employee there.0

Yeah, your mom is definitely right. Better to pass on that position because you'll be paying taxes and, depending on the tax laws where you are, it could be a lot. Sometimes great pay doesn't equal a great deal, or a lot of fun...0

i think it depends on your own personal stats or whatever. i worked for a tutoring company as a private contractor throughout the year and i payed close to nothing due to a combination of spending on transportation and not making a super duper amount of money. all there is is a separate form, but then again i'm not the one who did all the paperwork so maybe it is complicated. i think you best bet is to ask somebody (an accountant?) who actually does this stuff for people every year, instead of listening to different opinions.
oh man teaching K is going to be super fun! I taught first grade this year on the side with school, i want to teach K next year though! Those kids are SOOOO funnny.0 -
It doesnt really matter whether you pay taxes each check or you pay all at the end of the year, you will be paying the same amount. The govt charges you a % of your pay. There's no reason you shouldnt take the job!! Just be smart and set aside a portion of each check to go to taxes later so you dont get caught without it! Personally, I prefer paying what I owe at the end of the year instead waiting for the govt to return the intrest-free loan I gave them!0
