What to do when tired sore and stiff

Yesterday I upped my exercise as I have hit the dreaded plateau! I did 4 k with inclines and 40 mins of an exercise DVD. I feel like I was hit by a bus today I am sore stiff and tired. So what should I do today? Should I just rest go for a walk or suck it up and go for a run and do the DVD again? All advice appreciated. Thank you

    The first thing I would do is losen up those muscles by taking a warm/hot shower, and then do some lighter exercises for today. Maybe some stretches, yoga or pilates?

    A bath in Epsom salts would help along with some stretching.

    Are you doing anything post workout, like a recovery drink at all...or a protein meal?
    I have found that I am much less sore when I have a recovery drink and protein within 30 min after my workouts.

    It's important for you to get rest, if it's not your rest day, I would encourage you to do what you can do...as anything is better than nothing. It's important we stay on our routine or if you're anything like me...if I tell myself to take it ez today because I'm too sore, tomorrow my body is telling me i'm even more sore so should take it ez again. not a good habit.

    rest and stretch well - you don't want to push too hard and risk getting hurt :) If you really cannot sit still without doing some exercising (which I usually can't) maybe a light walk but don't over do it. Sounds like you had a great workout yesterday, keep it up.

    Stretching is definitely a must within any routine. That's something I tend to do on my rest day...it's a complete body relief...never felt so good!

    I would say - do a lot of streching for today and leave your exercises for tomorrow. Yoga would do you a lot of good.

    Walking sounds good. In fact I think I'll take one myself! I'm a little sore as well from doing some intense cardio. If you're really sore may I suggest taking a warm bath in epsom salts. I used to think it was just an old wives tale until I tried it and it really works!

    I would rest up and just do some stretching out and carry on tomorrow .. If you rest for to many days I found myself getting worse with the aching not being able to walk up and down the stairs properly.. felt like a old women..lol

    I was going to say stretch and get in a light workout, so basically the same as this first answer. Active recovery, a light workout, will speed up recovery. Also make sure you are getting lots of protein as it will aid in recovery.

    Ok- I just did legs like an animal this week and today is day 4 and it still hurts!!! The first day after I kept it light..I like the suggestions of a light walk..really running or anything using muscles is not a good idea. They are ripped and inflammed...walking is good to get the blood flow through it to help repair. My worst day was 2 days after..I had a lot of trouble walking..ugh...I had wine that day! ha ha ha

    Thank you for all the replies, I think I will follow your advice stretch walk and hot bath! Thankfully no one said run or do DVD again! I think I would have cried!!!

    Stretch, stretch, stretch. I would then still do some light Cardio.

    Considering that I'm off to the chiropractor today because I didn't listen to my psoas muscle group when they were screaming in agony for the past two days, I would wholeheartedly recommend a walk, and a LOT of stretching, stretching, stretching. Yoga or Qi Gong!
