Best estimate for calories burned?

When I use online calculators to determine calories burned...say for using an elliptical trainer...they tend to give me rather different results than the actual calorie readout on the machine itself. I input age, weight, etc. for both, but where the machine itself shows 365 calories for 35 minutes, the online tools usually indicate anywhere from 500-800 or more based on the same info.
Could I use a heart rate monitor to bypass the madness and get a more consistent reading?

Definitely use a HRM. The machines used to tell me over 600 calories for a one hour session on the elliptical, and my HRM said it was more like 350. Definitely a big difference that can sabotage weight loss!0

The heart rate monitor is definitely going to be your most accurate reading! I would use it instead of any charts because it's the only one that knows the actual intensity your working at!0

Thanks. I'll look into picking one up.
