OK so I want to run.... I have been walking 5 miles everyday for the last month and a half.... before that, I went and got fitted for some running shoes.... They are brooks, dyad 6. When I try to run, get shin splints and a burning pain in my left ankle... Whats my next step? Should I try and get fitted somewhere else to make sure I was fitted correctly?... Also, I am sure my form is ALL over the place.....

Yes, new shoes and start SLOW. I started running around 190 lbs and started with maybe 1/2 mile. You can see my siggy for where I am now and it to over a year to get there.

For what it's worth I'm not a big fan of Brooks, but it really depends on your build, feet and weight.

    Good luck!

Have you tried the Elliptical machines at the gym? I hate to run because of shin splints and knee pain. I find the ellipticals to be less impactful and much smoother for running. Plus I'm heavy-chested and find running to be uncomfortable without lots of extra support. Maybe it doesn't burn as much in calories as the treadmill or running outside, but it's much easier on my body, which I think is more important in the long term.

i was fitted at a running store and ended up w/ the brooks adrenaline and i HATED them. they were a stability shoe which i needed but i got the worst knee pain ever with them and the arch of my foot went numb.

i ended up going back the next week and exchanging them for asics GT2160 which i LOVE. i had asics when i started to run but they were cushioning not support (i picked them out myself a while ago) and the new asics i got are LOVE.

moral of the story... if you're not happy w/ your shoes, take them back and exchange them if you're within the return period. usually they give you 30 days to wear the crap out of them and if you don't like them they'll refit you no questions asked.

Start really slow. If you've been in your shoes for more than 6 months and you've been walking up to 5 miles it may be time for new shoes anyway. You've also gotten stronger and it's likely your stride has changed because of that. Start by running slow for 30 seconds and then walking 2. do this for a mile the first time. Maybe walk your normal 5 but the last 1 mile do a combo run/walk. When you get home stretch and then put ice on the fronts of your legs and ankles. After a week increase slowly and add another 30 seconds or drop the time down. This is actually slower than C25k, but does work if you need to strengthen shins. Sore is ok, pain is not... The Brooks Dyads are pretty neutral shoes but they are designed in such a way that they fool some sales staff into thinking they are a stability shoe. Another option might be a Brooks Adrenaline, or a completely different brand. It's common to need to change your shoe especially as you get stronger and lose weight. If you tell the staff at the store you are having shin splints they can show you a few good stretches for your calves and shins.

Its not that these are bad shoes.... I am just thinking something different might help better... I just hate spending that kind of money and they not be the right shoe... But I am goign back next week to get a new fit... we shall see.
