How much is too much???

I need some insight! How much exercise is too much? It is my goal to be healthy and strong, not just lose weight. I want to make sure that I am getting the right amount of cardio versus strength training and I want to tone up, not bulk up. I have already gone through the 30 Day Shred and am now going to the gym about 5 days a week and doing about 30 to 45 mins of cardio and another 20 to 30 mins of strength training alternating legs and arms everey other day. I don't have more time than that to spend in the gym bc I have a family and work full time. I really want to go back through the 30 Day Shred bc it really gave me some awesome results. SO, with all that said, my question is............is it too much to do all that in one day..... to workout at the gym then come home and do the Shred later after we've had dinner and the kids are in bed?

Again, my goal is to be healthy but I also know myself and sometimes when I focus in on something I become obsessed wth it so I am trying hard NOT to do that with exercise but do what I need to do to lose the weight in a healthy way and be strong and fit. I know it takes time and I am in it for the long haul so if it's too much for one day then I will stick with just the gym for a while. Ok I've begun rambling now so I will just leave it at that. Your insight is very much appreciated!

I'm really not too sure on how much. I however, have been doing the 30 day shred and I am on day 5 just did level 2 today. I usually only do that daily and on tues. nights I do Zumba as well. I've been thinking about doing some other cardio or something at night time but I'm not sure as well. Hopefully someone can give us a bit of insight =)

I have found that double exercise days are what gives me the best results. Lately I just have not had the time or energy for double days.

If you have the energy to do a little more exercise after your kids are in bed, more power to you.. go girl! Just remember to eat right and make sure your body has enough fuel so you don't crash.

Check out this article, and do some research on over-training. If you find you're having symptoms of over-training, cut back. Otherwise, do what feels right to you! I'd just say, psychologically, make sure that you can maintain this kind of gym-going and that it's not just a spurt that's going to cause you to fizzle out.

    Good luck!

I think your gym time is EXCELLENT! that is about what I do at the gym... Cardio is key, you don't want to do TOO much cardio or you start burning your muscle along with your fat. and that is No bueno.

As far as the 30DS I would say that you could do a double work out 2-3 times a week, but not every day. I do double work outs tuesday and thursday, I do my videos in the morning adn then hit the gym after work. i find that it gives me just a tad bit of an extra boost.

just remember to keep your cardio in check, no 3 hours cardio sessions.

You aren't doing too much from a numbers standpoint. Too much would be 4-5 hours a day, 7 days a week. I know because I used to do that, but it was exercise bulimia. The best way to know if you are doing too much is to see how you feel. If you are constantly tired or sore, it may be time to take a break from it. Rest days may seem daunting (I can't take them, my anxiety kicks in) but the body needs them. Just take one day easier that the other. If you want to incorporate the 30ds back in, pick a day when you have a lighter type of workout already planned. Just remember, focus on how to feel. You're body will tell you when it's too much.

Thanks to everyoing for thier comments and insight. I guess it all boils down to, I need to try it and see how it works out for me and how I feel afterward. I think I will try doing the 30 Day Shred 3 days a week (two of those days being the days I don't go to the gym and then one other day as well). I will start there and see how it goes.
