As yourself, is it physical or emotional hunger???

Physical hunger

* Builds gradually
* Strikes below the neck (e.g., growling stomach)
* Isn't accompanied by a sense of compulsion
* Occurs several hours after a meal
* Goes away when full
* Leads to feeling of satisfaction after eating

Emotional hunger

* Develops suddenly
* Hits above the neck (e.g., a "taste" for ice cream)
* Results in an urgent need to eat
* Is unrelated to time since last meal
* Is specific, often for a particular food or brand
* Persists despite fullness
* Leads to guilt and shame after eating

  • GREAT post! It is so true.

    That list is so true- the examples for each type of hunger are exactly how I feel at those times. When I am physically hungry and don't have time to eat or access to food, my problem is that I go overboard once I get to food and eat everything in sight. I think I can try to address that one with better planning.

    The emotional hunger is a different issue. It struck last night (had to have caramel popcorn) and I gave in even tho I recognized the symptoms from the list. So, as someone else asked earlier, any advice on how to resist emotional eating?

    I know - if we knew the answer we wouldn't be here. :laugh: Just thought I'd ask anyway. I've noticed that a lot of people on mfp have great suggestions that just never occur to me or else I just need a reminder.
