That feeling...

So I'm not a super, gung-ho road cyclist, but I ride a bike to work and to the gym each day. Awhile ago I read an article about how competitive cyclists isolate their muscles and use just their legs to pedal uphill while keeping their core engaged to keep their upper body as still and balanced as possible. I thought "Oh that makes so much sense" and then forgot about it. Every day I trudge up a very steep bridge, leaning side to side, and putting my whole body into it, and by the time I get to the top I'm covered in sweat and desperately trying to get my breathing under control. That all changed on my ride tonight! I was tired from the gym and was not really focused on the peak of the bridge as usual. I used some joggers as sort of pacers and just dug in with my heals and climed the bridge. IT WAS SO EASY! Of corse I felt the burn in my thighs but that was welcome compared to the way I exausted my self before. That article came floding into my memory and I actually UNDERSTOOD the feeling. I guess it was sort of like learning to surf; no one could explain the feeling you get when you know the exact moment to pop up on the board to catch the wave, but when you finally catch that first wave you know exactly what they were trying to say.
