So, i noticed this a few days ago.. when you actively watch your weight and your portions, you spend less money. Anyone else notice this? I think its because my meals stretch farther (ie: one box of spaghetti feeds me for 7 days if I follow the serving sizes - That's 1.10 to give me dinner for 7 days, plus maybe another 2$ for sauce).

  • I noticed the same thing but for the opposite reason--when our budget got tight and we had to stop eating out, it became much easier to stay under my allotted calories for the day!! Restaurant food is, for the most part, so calorie dense!!

We've saved so much money because we're not wasting our money on Pop and Chips. Its ridiculous. I was buying 2 cases of Diet Pepsi and 2 family size bags of tortilla chips a week. That really adds up! Fresh frutis and veggies have gone up in price a bit, but we've been buying alot more frozen veggies to replace them.

We went from spending $80 - $100 in groceries for 2 people to $50-$70. Much better!

My husband and I used to spend $200 a Week of food and going out. Now we spend $45 a week on food =) it's awesome.
  • I've noticed the same thing! It's been about 3 weeks since I last bought groceries. Oh I've picked up a few odds and ends once or twice since then, but it was never more than $10 each time. Before we made the commitment to get healthier, I had to go grocery shopping every 1 to 2 weeks. $150+ for only 2 people was getting ridiculous.

Mine isn't either, per se, but he eats whatever I cook because he's too lazy to cook. I made it clear to him upfront, that while I would not be cooking "diet" food, I would not be cooking the usual fried and fatty foods and that I would NOT be cooking separate meals for him. Good thing for him he was okay with that. He doesn't have a problem with the way we eat now. I'm still cooking a lot of our favorites. The difference is now I'm making them healthier by preparing them differently.

I'm lucky, I eat a lot of pasta, tofu, and simple stuff. One pack of whole wheat pasta is seven servings... so 1.10$ will give me 7 dinners right there. I just picked up 0.33$ cans of tomato sauce at big lots, so that'll easily be enough sauce to last me for the next 2 weeks. I get tofu at the chinese market at 3lbs for 2$ which I'll add to the sauce, along with some frozen spinach (about 2$ at the store).

Veggie burgers are my biggest cost because no one seems to have them in bulk :(

Things are also getting cheaper the more stuff I make on my own. My mom gave me a bread machine and I'm looking forward to starting to use it - hopefully tonight! I have to do the math to find out if its cheaper to make my own or to buy bread. I'll give a little bit on the calories if it'll save me cash.

Money is so tight right now :(

I found it to be the opposite LOL...my bf and I never really ate out though. We went from buying the crappy .79 cent white pasta and 70-30% ground beef for $3 for 5 lbs to the healthy, $2/box whole wheat pasta and the $3.88/lb ground lean turkey....ouch, my wallet is nibbling on ME it's so hungry. :ohwell:
