Hi

I'm just wondering how important breakfast actually is in terms of weight loss. To date I've never had it... but been told it's the most important meal of the day. If so what, and why?

You are spoused to always eat breakfast. It's what gets your metabolism up and running. I used to never be a big breakfast person myself, but have started making myself eat it, even if it's something small... One thing I have noticed is when I get up and eat breakfast (usually about 30min. after I get up) I feel good and won't "snack" as much during the day.
  • It is said that people who eat a good breakfast eat less through out the day and are more energized durring the day. Ive found that eating breakfast helps me to wake up. Granted I dont eat much for breakfast, I usually have a small bowl of cereal, but it still help me get going in the morning :)

Breakfast is so important. You havent eaten for 8 hours and your metabolism is slowed down. You need something to get it started and energize you at the start of the day.

    My experience is mixed.
When I have a large breakfast (eggs, meat, beans, toast etc) I tend to miss lunch as I'm not hungry.
When I have a small breakfast such as fruit, I don't feel as sluggish throughout the morning but I do have a midmorning snack.
Both breakfast types has resulted in similar weightloss.
  • My nutritionist said I should eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. I believe for the reasons that other people stated already.

According to the Insanity: Asylum meal guide you should eat the bulk of your calories in the morning and taper off toward the evening. Your body is a food burning machine early in the day and needs that fuel. Toward the end of the day you're starting to shut down. Depending on your calorie needs, try eating between 400-500 calories in the morning and then get down to about 200 for dinner. Be careful not to dip under 1200 or you'll go into starvation.

I tend to eat less at other meals when I have breakfast, but only when that breakfast has a good amount of protein. If I had the hugely carb breakfasts that a lot of other women do (yogurt, fruit, etc) then I would be starving an hour later. I like to have an omelet with a couple of links of turkey sausage and possibly some whole wheat toast with it.

When I go without breakfast, I crave the weirdest things...I never seem to want junk food like Cheetos unless I skip breakfast.

But if you can control your cravings and not go over your calorie goal, then I don't believe it is as necessary as we used to think. I have seen some research out there that tends to point to conclusions that state that as long as you are eating the right amount, the when doesn't matter as much. It's just that us breakfast eaters and 5 meals a day peeps tend to crave less and binge less cause we eat more often. I think that's the real benefit, at least in my experience.

That's basically what Tom Venuto says and I follow his advice. Seems to work for me.

I don't eat breakfast. No issues for weight loss or gain here (depending on what the goal is)

    Here's the deal...
Figure out what works for you!

Seriously, people -- not everyone is the same.

Genetics determines our ability to oxidize fat so even the type of the nutrition you take in needs to be tweaked slightly.
Are there general rules, sure -- but you need to slowly make changes and figure out what works for you.

    Approaches?
    1. Try working out without breakfast - supplement with some BCAA before working out

    2. Try working out without breakfast - supplement with some BCAA before and during your workout / add in some protein to the recovery drink. I would recommend downing it in intervals.

3.If you don't like the way you feel abort / eat an hour before you workout.

    General Tip
Eat plenty after you workout, your insulin response is optimal and you want to feed the muscle. Don't miss out on this window.

    Final thought:
People are good at telling you what works for them.
That advice, however, is in the context of their bodies response and where they are in their fitness journey.
Listen, give it a go.. if you don't like it adjust.

"If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree. "
BUT Can you look at a tree and learn a lesson, yes!

"The strongest oak tree was once a crazy nut that held its ground." Don't give up you'll get to where you want to be!!!

^Truth!!! I'm not a breakfast guy. It's not that I don't like it, but if I eat it, I'll be eating non-stop all day.

Some people are the exact opposite - if they skip breakfast, they'll overeat during the day.

Some people like working out after breakfast, some like working out on an empty stomach.

Just find what works for you, and go with it.

BINGO !!! I use the LeanGains protocol and my results have been outstanding. Sixteen hour fast until noon each day with an eight hour feeding "window" between 12-8pm in which I take in all of my calories. Used to think I HAD to have breakfast. Now I just think it's a wasted meal for optimal gains & fat loss.

I eat breakfast everyday, and usually not a light one either. I'll typically have between 300-550 calories for breakfast. It makes me less hungry throughout the day and more energized, for sure. I'll typically have a fruit smoothie with protein, peanut butter on bread or a low carb tortilla wrap, and green tea or some cottage cheese with fresh fruit and almond milk. I used to eat very light breakfasts when I was at my heaviest. Now that I'm eating more in general, I'm losing.
  • Very important!!!!! boost your "M" 25 percent more........good luck!!!!!

Breakfast is so important. You havent eaten for 8 hours and your metabolism is slowed down. You need something to get it started and energize you at the start of the day.

This is not true. Yes, you have not eaten for 8 hours, but it is likely that your body is still digesting your last meal of the previous day. As for your metabolism slowing down after 8 hours of not eating, that is completely false. For the first 24-36 hours at least of not eating your metabolism speeds up to allow you to hunt down your next meal. There is tons of research on this.

As for eating breakfast, it doesn't matter. All the studies I have seen that talk about how important it is are doing surveys. That is, they survey several 1000 people and ask various questions about weight and eating breakfast and the like. Then they find that those who don't eat breakfast are overweight. All that does is show a correlation, but it does not show why they are overweight. The assumption made is that it is because they skip breakfast, but it could just as easily be assumed they are skipping breakfast because they are already overweight and are using that that cut their calories.

In there end what is important is how many calories you eat in a day, and the quality of those calories, not how often you eat or whether you start with breakfast within an hour of getting up.

What, if anything do you drink at breakfast? I've been drinking protein plus mango juice, but it has 190 cal. for 8 oz.... Too many cals for one drink. May just switch back to almond milk, but wondered if anyone has found a healthy morning beverage (other than a mimosa) :0

Its really not what is important or what should I do. Its more about what works for you.
Most of the brothers talking about fasting and things like that know that breakfast is not what it is made out to be. you can skip breakfast if you like and not have to worry about gaining weight or not having your metobolism slow down, that takes days actually. If you eat 3000 cals a day then make sure you eat them, no matter when it is. There is studies behind all of this so most of the intermitten fasting people responding are speaking from knowledge and stuides hta have been performed.

If you like breakfast eat it, if you don't then eat later

    leagains approach is legit though
