So I finally purchased a HRM, today it arrived and after setting it all up I jogged on the spot for about a minute and it told me I'd burnt 4 calories. Do you think this is accurate or do I need to test it for longer than a minute. I know it's only likely to be a guide as I don't have a chest strap, but i'm sure at times I am burning more than the exercise machines are saying I am.

  • Hi,

I was always under the impression that I was burning a bazzilion calories before I purchased a Polar HRM with a chest strap. I think it gives me an accurate calorie burn value which is on an average 10-11 calories burnt per minute, depending on the intensity of the excercise. I have never owned a HRM before, and this is my first one. So, I do think a display with a chest strap is going to be more accurate than the one that doesnt have one. I have also seen other posts where members say that their non strap & cheaper HRM's seem to be over estimating the calorie burn.

They are a little less accurate without the chest strap, and one minute may not be the best sample to measure on.

I bought myself a HRM after noticing that the same amount of exercise burnt different amounts of calories on different machines. What I have found out is the machines tend to overestimate a great bit (sometimes off by 100 calories in an hour) because they calculate using resistance so it's not always the best source.

I don't think anything you can use yourself is going to be totally accurate, but they are better than nothing at all. You'll have to spend some time with it, and see how it works for you. This could take a bit, depending on how you are measuring your results.

Cheers, I will keep track of it and see how it works for me and once I have more money i'll invest in a chest strap HRM,
