late night eating

erm, sorry about the double topic post but this is a totally different question!
at the dinner table tonight the family and i got into this argument over eating at night.
for years my parents have lived by their 9pm tea and snack whereas my brother and i always get hungry at about 10pm.
before i started MFP i used to snack around then and i think that is what made me gain weight - when i do it now, it normally puts me over my calorie goal for the day. (my brother could eat a horse and not gain weight so we'll ignore him for now)
my point is that i tried to eat a bit more at dinner or during the day PLUS train myself to just not eat so late but it just isn't working. i still get hungry at 10pm on the dot every night and according to my brother and parents you shouldn't eat after a certain time (hence the argument at dinner or what time it was...)
My question is pretty much what is good to eat so late? i normally eat cereal for my night snack since i have serious addiction issues with cereal but i'm guessing the carbs aren't a good idea...

As long as you save calories you can eat at any time. I eat every night and have had no problem losing. I just budget for it during the day. This is what I had today. I also enter before I eat so I know how to plan. I still have some calories left.

Because of kids and what not I usually end up running late a night and snack after. So I normally eat my last snack at about 11pm. Just have to make sure you save calories during the day. I usually eat mixed nuts or jerky for my night snack, sometimes trail mix - just depends on how many calories I have left.0

Late night snacking and weight gain is a myth. It's the calories you need to watch. Calories in V calories out. Doesnt matter what time of day you eat them, a calorie in is the same at whatever time of day.
Save you cals, and snack away. Dont ignore your brother in the calculation, he probably eats at night but just doesnt OVEReat!
And don't worry about the carb hype either. I eat most of my food between 3pm and midnight, and lose weight just fine when I'm consistenly in deficit. Just try being consistent and in deficit. If that isnt working then perhaps look at macros etc. But mostly macros come into play when you're nearing goal weight.
Good luck :flowerforyou:0 -
I'm the same, with a twist. I am an evening grazer. Instead of fighting it, I plan for it. I reserve 300-400 calories a day for my evening snacks. Yes, snacks. That's not a typo. I know it's not 'ideal' as purported by unknown experts who nobody can ever seem to accurately reference [which leads me to believe somebody made it up, even if it does sound 'logical' and like many other 'truths, it's become true by virtue of the number of times its been repeated]. But that's when my body says "Eat!" So I do. I don't let the so-called 'experts' [who are usually colleagues, friends, family and well-meaning strangers quoting something they 'heard'] confuse me anymore. I give my body what it needs when it asks for it. Within reason, according to my own understanding, factually researched knowledge and teeth on experience, which is not as useless as the experts, media and weightloss industry would have me believe. I follow my own plan, which often flies in the face of 'expert' advice for the masses. When I've lost the weight, I WILL say, "I told you so!" Na na na na na na. :glasses:
Do your own experimenting. Find out what works for you. My body, my science experiment. And keep your hands off my bunsen burner.
