Elevated Heart Rate

I had a quick question...

I'm really really anemic and iron deficient. Therefore, when I work out, my heart rate goes up very fast, and very high. I have to take exercise easy, since I get tired quite quickly. I wanted to ask though... I'm 18, and my heart rate gets up in the 180's and 190's with pretty average exertion. Does this mean that I burn more calories overall than what I'm logging?

Thanks!

I'm thinking you need to work on correcting your anemia. If your body doesn't have enough blood cells, your heart has to pump harder and faster to get the oxygen to the tissues. I do not believe that it means that your metabolism is going faster. If you are really really anemic, your body is going into a shock like state with the increased work. Eat right, see your doctor regularly, and do what the doc tells you to do.

My doc said my max heart rate should be 220- my age (32). But I'm not anemic, so I would definately consult your doc.

I think you need to talk to your doc before you do anything very strenuous. Anemia can be very serious and you need to be working to correct it. I'm guessing your increased heart rate is your body trying to oxygenate itself with the anemia, not due to you working harder or burning more calories.

I've had chronic anemia for over a year now. My hemoglobin is twice what it should be. I've discussed exercise with my doctors, and they've told me that there's no problem, so long as I listen to my body.

The responses point to the fact that I'm probably burning a normal amount of calories though, thank you :)
