Lifting weights

So I have a trainer I started working with twice a week. He has me on a weight lifting program and for the first time in my life I'm breaking a sweat in the weight room and huffing and puffing. I logged my exercise into MFP but it didn't earn me extra calories. That's FINE, I don't NEED extra calories, but I'm wondering if heavy duty lifting does burn a decent amount of calories?
The rest is just commentary - no question left - I am SO excited to be working with this trainier for a couple reasons. One, he's my best friend's husband, TWO, he's not certified yet, he's in the process, so he isn't charging me. I am doing weights 2xs a week and cardio (usually a kickboxing class) 3x a week. The other two days it is my GOAL to at least walk but that doesn't always happen.
I'm hoping that by the end of summer all of this exercising is such a habbit that when school starts again (I'm a teacher) I'll continue the routine. I am feeling strong and excited to have sore muscles.

weight lifting can burn a decent amount of calories for sure. You just need a HRM to figure out how much you burn. In 45 min I can burn like 300+ calories doing strength training.0

My trainer told me that I burn about 500 calories an hour for weight lifting, which you can enter under cardio, strength training. :flowerforyou:0

Weightlifting is a must!!! When you are just sitting on the couch or sleeping you are burning calories. This is called your Basal Metabolic Rate. The rate at which you are burning calories while you are just sitting there or sleeping is increased by weight lifting. The more tone your muscles are from weightlifting the more that rate is increased. 67% of all calories are burned from this. So yes keep lifting weights if you want to lose weight!! Diet, cardio, and lifting weights are essential to losing weight :P0

I guess I need to get a HRM too because if you log 60 mins of lifting on here as cardio its only like less than 200 cals burned and I know it has to be more.0

Every pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day by just existing. Gain 2 pounds of muscle, 100 calories a day to maintain it. That is why weight lifting is so good for permanent weight loss and maintanence.0

Last Friday was the first day I had my HRM so I tracked both lifting and running separately.
For 21 minutes of heavy lifting (about 30 seconds rest in between sets) I burned 248 calories. (This is what my HRM read)
I'm sure you're burning as much as MFP thinks and maybe even more!0 -
you don't burn calories when you lift weight really.... Lifting weights help you burn calories when you aren't doing anything... Look up Basal Metabolic Rate0

This made me laugh a lot for some reason. Awesome! Yeah, lift away friend. I was in a weight loss competition. I came in second. The person who came in first has stopped losing weight because all he did was cardio cardio cardio. In the meantime, I'm still going down in weight, inches and fat because I incorporated lifting in my plan. Just don't hurt yourself. be safe and good luck!0 -

Sorry, but I disagree with this statement. :noway:0
