could i have schin splints from all the walking i've done (16 hours in two days, two groups of 8 hours) it was mostly on concrete and the pain i'm having is consistent with what wikipedia says. i've never ran or anything so i've never felt this before. my caves and front of my thighs hurt too, as well as my lower abs and back.

Theres a good chance it isnt shin splints. They usualy occur with prolonged excercise without warming up or stretching. It is more likely that your muscles have been given a bit of a 'shock'!!
Rest is the best thing, and if you can, apply some ice packs to the affected areas. Im sure you will be fine.

ice them. I would also suggest doing strengthing exercises. (sit with your legs out and have some one resist at your toes as you flex your feet. if it really is shin splints, you will feel this alot, but it will help. do it 3-4 times for 10-20 seconds.)
Good luck!0 -
No offense, but if all of that is hurting, are you sure it is shin splints and not DOMS?0

Shin splints are when you damage the muscles on the shins. They create little tears in the muscle. Shin splints are when the muscles have been given a bit of shock. This definitely sounds like shin splints to me. I have had them. Walking 8 hours a day for 2 days is excessive, especially if it was done on concrete. You are going to have to take a break until the pain goes away. I had them really bad back in February and it put me out of commission for two weeks. The best thing you can do for them is the R.I.C.E. treatment. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. My doctor also put me on an anti-inflammatory when I was still having pain after my first week of RICE. They are very painful. Take it easy or they either wont go away or they will get worse. Also, try drawing the ABC's with your toes. That helps stretch out the muscles. You can even do it when you're laying in bed.0 -

i got the rest and elevation down. i will ice them and i'm thinking about wrapping my ankles seeing as my ankles and knees are swollen.0 -

OMG can i wait until the pain subsides to do this? i can barley walk!0 -
The thighs hurting when you're not moving, is probably not a sign of shin splints, but of something else as well.
But, I do have to say, based on everything you've said, I'm not terribly convinced it is shin splints. If it doesn't go away within a few days, you definitely have a problem. I've had muscle soreness that was terribly bad due to track workouts before.
Also, to the lady that talked about little tears... little tears happen to our muscles and body all of the time with working out and it does not mean injury.0 -

i figured that much. i think i just strained those muscles too much. and i'm pretty sure i have schin splints AND doms. i'm pretty messed up and never going to do that again!
idk i could just be super sore but the sorest part of me in my schins and inner thighs.0 -

I really hope it's better for you much quicker and I hope it's not shin splints!0 -

doing specific stretches for shin splints will actually make them feel better. At least the time of doing them. And by all means ice them. If you sit there with ice packs wherever it hurts it helps. I get them pretty bad regardless of how often I workout or whether I stretch or not or how much pressure I put on them. I am just prone to them. And some ibuprofen!0 -
New shoes did the trick for me. I buy Nike shox every six months and haven't had any shin splints in 10 years.0

what kind of stretches do you do? i like physically can't do too much i actually had to stop an hour early because i felt like my legs were going to give out, my partner kept asking me if i was going to make it, i almost did fall a couple times.0 -
i talked to my mom's best friend aka my other mommy, she's a life long runner, and she doesn't think i have schin splints, she thinks i just over exerted my muscles.0

I've had it and I have always found massaging your thumb between the bone and the muscle really helps although it can be quite tender and also if you have any lavender oil, massage that in. It works for me.

Absolutely! if you are in that much pain, i really suggest you see a doctor. The intensity could suggest something more serious, like stress fractures. Good luck to you!!0
