My tummy is sometimes bloated after I work out - is this normal?? I drink plenty of water through out the day and when I'm exercising - just wondering if anybody else has experienced this problem.

I'm lactose intolerant and was getting frustrated that I was still experiencing bloat when not consuming milk products. Little did I know that my Coffee-Mate creamer had milk proteins (casein).

Might you have a food allergy or is it simply when you work out?

Your body is flushing out all the toxins as you work out, sometimes I feel slightly bloated after working out, but as soon as I relieve myself I feel fine. It's probably just your bowels going to work. Also, I know that if I sweat out too many electrolytes & I drink a tone of water my body tries to hold onto it....try adding a little bit of sports drink to your water bottle or eat a couple sport beans half way thru your workout.

If it's not that, then consider lactose or gluten intollerance/allergy.

Yes, I get it all the time, its why i dont wear 'skinny' clothes to the gym, cause i know after it, i will be alittle swollen.

I think its the main reason alot of fellas 'pump up' in the gym before going out on the town.

    Hi Kate,

When I first started running, I noticed that I would have a little bloat in my tummy area too. I don't know what it was, but eventually it flattened out. I used to eat high sodium foods and I thought that this was a result, but then I realized that my digestive system needed cleaning out and I contributed the bloat to left over food in my digestive system...could this be a possible factor for you too?

When you work out with weights you produce excess lactic acid, which results in the formation of excess methane gas, which produces BLOAT! Drink water and eat protein after each workout to minimize it.

    Hi guys

Thanks for all the replies - I'm glad I'm not alone with this as I thought I was doing something wrong!! I used to be a demon for salt but I have cut this down a lot since starting MFP & my bloated tummy isn't as bad as it had been. I just seem to notice it more after exercise for some reason. I'll give the protein post work out a try. I am lactose intolerant. Cheeses (especially processed) & cows are milk are a big no, no for me as they make me ill. I can take chocolate in little amounts and it doesn't upset me but anything too heavy and I feel sick.
