Once a week I cook up several different things; ground flavored (taco or italian) turkey, turkey burgers, chicken breasts, rice, noodles, and a few different types of veggies. I keep pasta sauce and other toppings on hand too. Then when I get home I can just get my measuring cups & spoons and make myself dinner. Also packing a lunch and maybe some snacks is great. Other wise I eat at Subway, Panda Express, or Applebee's because it is easy to track the calories.

    pack a lunch!!
i really hated being in the kitchen.. but i recently found out that i enjoy it.. i was working two jobs, and i couldnt fall asleep right away, so i started to cook to unwind.. i would make something and pack it for lunch for the following day.. i found it to be healthier and saved myself some money as well.. if i had the day off, i would make extra for dinner and pack the left overs.. you can find some great recipes on line that don't take too much time in the kitchen and are healthy.. sometimes i would get a footlong sub at subway and eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner..

I often buy pre-packed meat which is most filling and easy!

You're going to have to bring your food with you. Buy yourself a cooler pack, some water bottles and a bunch of storage containers. Then prepare your food at home, pack it and bring it with you.

Most of the time I'm rushing to get from one job to the other and don't have time to pack a lunch... Any suggestions for those situations?

How many excuses are you going to make?

If you spend a little free time once or twice a week washing, cutting, and bagging fruit and veggies, it's easy to grab and go when you need it.

Yes it is a challenge to be constantly on the go, away from your home and routine, and still maintain a healthy diet. For the past year, much by accident, I was doing research on maintaining low blood sugar and the guidance I received from my nutruitionist and reading several books and my current exercise/meditation has transformed me in amazing ways. I have lost 35lbs, gained significant muscle mass and my body fat is holding at 16%.

If you read the research the clear guidance for maintaining low(normal) blood sugar is to follow the basic steps:
    1. Eliminate processed sugar from your diet
    2. Eliminate carbohydrates which are high on the glycemic index (breads, rices, pasta, deserts, etc)
    3. Consume high fiber foods
    4. Consume foods which slowly break down into your system avoiding blood sugar spikes and those hunger pains
    5. Eliminate All! Sodas, fruit drinks, fried foods/junk food/fast food from your diet. Period
    6. Avoid eating snacks after 6 pm
    7. Religiously maintain your daily intake spread sheet to remind yourself of your eating habits

The rest of the story has nothing to do with diet. I believe the reason most folks go on diets is more than losing weight. It is about being happy, improving self esteem, taking control of their lives in a positive way and doing everything to find a healthy balance in life. After all finding joy and balance is really the goal, isn't it?? In order the accomplish this one must first committ to our Heath and joy as a priority, not something we do if we have the time. In addition to looking at food in a different way, begin to set time to exercise everyday (spin, go to a gym, run, walk) set the committment and priority.

The key to losing weight in the long term has everything to do with balance. It is balance in your mind, body and spirit on a daily basis which will ultimately bring you to places you have never been in your life. Forget the word diet. Diets sound like there is something wrong from which we must abstain. The new word is is balance and education.

Set your priorities, educate yourself about food and your body, stay connected with friends and family, consistently exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, enjoy your life, and the pounds will just fall off and you Will find your healthy weight and maintain it for a life time.

Remember, once you get your eating habits realigned, your body will stop demanding more junk. It is the constant spikes in our blood sugar which drive appetite. You can do it at home or on the road.

Examples of great on the go foods
    Breakfast:
Fiber one cereal with flax seed, blueberries and soy milk
Fruit low on glycemic index. Avoid bananas
    Egg white omelet with turkey/salsa
(all low carbs, 0 fat, high fiber)

Even on the road make time to exercise.

I'm seriously not kidding... I work at 2 pools about 25-30 min away from each other and the shifts, if I'm lucky are only 30 min apart. This isn't an excuse it's just a reality. I lost 23 lbs in one and a half months but I was able to put the time in to plan lunches and dinners during school but in the summer I'm only home to sleep... literally. So if you aren't going to benefit this topic then please don't comment at all.

For the rest of you: thank you so much for your feed back it's much appreciated and now that I only work one shift on the fourth I will probably be able to plan for my following work schedule accordingly with the help of your advice :-)

I guess what I'm really saying is that I need to find some good healthy microwaveable dinners; are there any out there? I've been eating some compleats ones but they definitely taste like the calories have been sucked out of them. Most of the time I'd much rather eat the french fries and pizza so easily accessible to me then eat the bland and lifeless meal I just pulled from the microwave.

DiGiorno makes some awesome 200 calories microwave pizzas. My fiancee loves the smaller Cafe Steamers as well.

As for my own packed lunches, I usually pack a collection of quick grab snacks. You could put together a box of nuts, veggies, deli meat slices, pretzels, whatever you like. Lately I've been planning out my days the night before, it makes the day go a lot easier and I look forward to eating the things I already planned to have.
