question about exercise

Since I over did when I started and messed up my back and knees the doctor says no exercise till I see her again. My question is I go to the post office everyday for work and have to go up and down 36 steps every day. Do I count that as exercise? I walk the steps not run. So if I do this every day how do I count it as exercise and calories. My other question is I park as far away from the door anywhere I go. Especially at work it is about 1 block to the door and I do this 4 - 6 times a day is this counted as exercise and how do I count the calories?

If you currently live a very sedentary life & are very out of shape I would consider this exercise, but for the average person this is pretty much just regular daily activity. If you are overly concerned give yourself an extra 50 calories a day?0

One thing you could do is get a cheap pedometer. That way you can see at the end of the day how many steps you walked. I believe there is appox. 2000 in a mile. You could possibly count that as a slow walk for about 10-15min. I'm not sure if that helps you at all.0

I would count it as walking slow pace and do about an average time of all events that you do per day.
for example:
4 errands ten min each= 40 min..
I hope this makes sense.

There's a stairs item under cardio - one of my friends records it every day - she's got 3 flights she goes up and down several times a day. And I agree with the other post: go get a pedometer. It doesn't matter how fast you're walking right now, but 2000 steps measures out to a mile. So the more you're walking (or hobbling ) around, the better!0

alacey That makes lots of sense to me
vegashockey I have a pedometer not even out of the package think I will try that
eillamarie I am sedentary and work 12 hour days most of the week so I am really out of shape with the doctor saying no exercise until I return just wondered what else would be considered exercise. Thinking what I do everyday.
Thanks to all for the great ideas!0 -
Hobble is right!!!! Back out and knees swollen like a small basket ball!! (not quite that big but enough to be serious hindrance!) My old age and my young mind got me in trouble! Have to remember keep it simple and slow to start. Thanks0

You can account for this exercise in one of two ways:
- set your daily activity to "lightly active". I've done this to account for the short walks to the bus stop each day and the walking around that I do during my day at work.
- set your daily acivity to "sedentary" and log the extra stuff by counting the minutes and adding it as "slow walking".0
