sleep and weight

I have two jobs, a normal 8 to 4:30ish day job and then I'm also a bartender part time, which means working till 2:30 am. I officially weigh myself on Thursdays, but lately I have been hopping on every other day, since I have been seeing progress (motivational of course)! However, if I get on the scale after working a late night, I have noticed that the scale ALWAYS, ALWAYS goes up, even if I have stayed within my calories and had n o late night foods. Last night we were so busy I didn't eat from 6 to 2 am and barely had time for a few glasses of water, but this morning the scale went up 2lbs! Does the irregular sleep pattern, effect the scale?

I have heard that you sleeping affects your weight but I can't tell you how. According to JM, some doctors think that when you hit a certain stage of sleep your metabolism increases. Now that's not definite but a possibility. Plus you need to make sure you eat enough. By under-eating you are doing yourself a disservice so make sure you get in at least your 1200 calories. It's definitely hard to balance all of these things that can affect your weight loss. Work, eating, exercise, sleep, etc... maybe you just need to find your groove...0

the lack and irregular sleep patterns, can make your body think you are in a "stress" mode which will raise cortisol levels. When you have higher cortisol levels it will make it harder (especially for women) to lose weight and can acually cause your body to hold on to weight.0

Wow thank you for the advice. Since I bartend on the weekends, I have noticed a pattern that every weekend my weight goes up or stay the same, and never ever will go down at all! And that is frustrating since I workout and do my best to eat the same as I do during the week. Then during the week its back to losing a pound or 2. Since it is work, I am not sure what else I can do to change that.0 -
I agree with what Dr. Deepak Chopra says about sleep in "Restful Sleep". He talks about stages of sleep/rest, and wakefulness, and says we go through 3, 2 hour periods before returning to the first. The important thing he mentions is that, ideally, we should go to bed by 10pm, because after that, a new cycle starts, and that's the best time to be asleep to be most rested. He also says we should wake up at 6am. Not really possible for the lifestyles of many people, but ideal. Rest can play a big part in what the scale says, but as long as you're generally moving toward your goals, I wouldn't worry too much about a few late nights a week. I weigh everyday and then take an average of the numbers by dividing by 7 to see if I am generally going in the right direction. :happy:0
