Letting go of an old crutch

So. I've been craving chocolate cake with white icing, my absolute end all be all favorite treat. Since I haven’t been able to find it by the slice at any of the local grocery stores, I was going to make one this weekend as a prize of sorts for a perfect week of clean eating. I tell you – the idea of that chocolate cake made me put down some of the bad choices more than once. Sometimes life works out because we just so happened to have a celebration at work today -complete with chocolate cake topped with white icing. It means I can easily eat only one small portioned piece and still get the craving out of my system. I've been thinking about that cake all morning. Finally – 11:30 rolls around and I’m first in line like I’ve never had anything to eat. I get the cake in my grubby little hands and head straight for my office only to be stopped TWICE by chit chatters. Didn’t they see the piece of heaven in my hands?? I dutifully eat my walnuts and tomato slices to help counter act the sugar a bit then it’s time for cake. I will tell you – the first bite was masterful. Exactly what I wanted and I swear it tasted better than any chocolate cake I’ve ever had. I could hardly wait to put the rest of it in my mouth. On the second bite, I realized the frosting wasn’t the super creamy butter cream I had in mind, but more of a powdered sugar and water type topping. On the third bite, I noticed that the cake was a bit greasy and left a film on my lips and teeth. When it was time for the fourth bite – I threw it away.

With a heavy heart, I proclaim to chocolate cake – I am over you. All these years I didn’t see you for what you really were. You hid behind my sugar laden pallet and let me believe you were worth every calorie. No more. I’m leaving you for a fresh plate of summer strawberries with natural whipped cream. Goodbye old friend.

Farewell, Chocolate Cake! Just remember that the first bite really WAS everything you wanted from it, and be happy that was all you needed! I've had the same feelings about coffee this last week and it's been quite strange to not want to drink a boatload of the stuff every day.

congrats on discovering that some of the things we think are SO yummy, just aren't quite as good as we remember them since we have changed our habits!!!!!

I love this! I read an article a long while back that simply talked about tasting our food. We're so busy shoving it in our mouths that we don't take the time to savor each bite - to see what we are really eating.. to "feel" it (for lack of a better phrase). More people should try it. You'll find your favorite chips really just taste like salted bark. Your favorite chocolate is gritty and waxy. If you're going to "waste" calories, you might as well do it on something absolutely scrumptious!

I don't even know you and I'm super proud of you!!!!! A few weeks ago I threw away a bag of dove chocolates because as good as the first one was it wasn't worth it!
  • I love this! I have noticed things like this, too in my weight loss journey. Keep up the good work!

Don't be too mean to that chocolate cake... look how well it made you eat the rest of this week... it served it's purpose of making you be "good" to get it... then it only had one good bite which it was nice enough to let you eat first :)

This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing; I think I've had to have the same conversation with Starbucks pastries. :-)

Great choice! Recently I find myself doing the same thing to various foods I enjoyed... they just aren't the same once you've changed your eating habits!
