Shin Splints?

I think I have shin splints...I ran for the first time ever on the road about 3 days ago, not for very long or very far as I am trying to work up to it. At first I just thought it was muscle soreness and the pain would go away like it always does but now I think it's shin splints from looking it up online. It's a dull ache on the front lower leg that won't go away...exactly like the websites said. Anyone have any remedies?? I have been doing walking and jogging in place for months and haven't had any kind of pain like this, now it hurts to walk these last few days. This is terrible, I need to get better fast so I can keep up my physical activity, I have 10 more pounds to lose to reach my first big goal! I wore Nike Reax when I was running and walking a few days ago, maybe I need better shoes? What kind of activity can I do in the mean time?

it feels like razors down the front of your shins. run your finger down the front of your shin bone and if you have splints you'll actually feel them, it feels kind of crackly. I use lots of ice and you'll probably have to halt the high impact for a couple of weeks. Jumping running etc will make them hurt and they wont heal unless you stop. Boxing will be good cardio to do in the mean time or if you have access to an elliptical its low impact and wont bother your shins (I switch to the elliptical EVERY time I get shin splints).

once the dull ache subsides you can slowly start getting back into your routine.

Thanks gal...the pain is not THAT bad..but it's more like a dull ache that is really noticeable when walking. I worked through it yesterday but don't want to damage my legs further if that's it. Boxing is a good idea! Why didn't I think of that? It must have been from the impact of actual running. I was in marching band for years and never had this problem. But as far as actually running, I don't think I've done that since high school! No jumping around for me then until this pain subsides...lots of boxing though, I do that all the time...

My sister's track coach told her to do these every day to avoid getting shin splints and when I do them I don't get shin splints. Anyways, stand on your heels with your toes in the air, pointed up as high as you can get them, and walk backwards for as long as you can. It will hurt a little bit, but it really helps!

used to get these at softball Ice works for a bit of immediate relief. That exercise posted about will help for the long run but take it easy for a few days if you don't you wont be able to walk right without pain...from experience.

sorry jess! guess I did hurt you with my big burn challenge

Anything non-impact will really help and let you get your burn without further hurting yourself, especially biking and swimming laps. Hang in there and I hope you feel better soon

Nah, you didn't hurt me Olivia...lol. I guess my body isn't used to those big burns. I did the shred last night though and walked a lot and felt fine...think it's nothing serious which I'm happy about since the boat challenge started yesterday!
  • I had shin splints a few months ago. My trainer told me to do flutter kicks in the pool.
