I am on the hunt for some healthy, low-cal snacks that I can eat during the day, especially at school. I have big breaks during my classes and I always get hungry, and I don't wanna resort to eating all the junk food that my college offers! Anyone have anything that they enjoy?!

  • I'm in college too and omg, they have some of the WORST food choices there. I always keep a few caramel or cheader rice cakes on hand. Its big so it gives my mouth something to do and they are only about 50 calories a piece. I always usualy keep an apple in my backpack as well. They always seem to fill me up...especially granny smith. I don't know why tho!

    Hope that helps!

    fruit... veggies.... fruit.... veggies....

Hardee's burger.... Dang, did that slip out? Don't listen to the evil side of me!

Fruit... veggies... fruit... veggies. Some even come with their own wrappings, like bananas and apples

I swear by hard boiled eggs.

You can cook them up ahead.

Peel one first thing in the morning.

Throw it in a sandwich baggie.

    Tie it shut.

It'll keep all day long til you're ready to nosh.

I love having almonds as a snack at school too. I also like having a few raisins with them too but I just noticed the other day how many calories almonds and raisins are!! They give me lots of energy though so that helps during class.

Other favorites: Fiber One Oats & Chocolate (yum for all those chocoholics out there!), String Cheese, my dad's homemade beef jerkey  , Honeycrisp apples, and if i have a long break i try to pack one of the 80 calorie Campbell's Soup at Hands. They have 4 varieties i think that only have 80 calories (like Chicken and Mini noodles) and my favorite is Classic Tomato which only has 110 calories. But of course you need access to a microwave!!

There's some great ideas here! I'm gonna hit the grocery store tomorrow and buy a few of these to try:-) It'll sure beat having to eat all the junk my university offers. Yuck.

Ok, I am going to get over my embarrassment of not knowing and just ask. What in the heck is hummus and does it really taste good?
  • I LOVE hummus and my hub HATES it. It's basically a puree of chickpeas (garbanzo beans), lemon juice, tahini (seasme paste), garlic, olive oil. It's not very low cal but it IS very healthy. I've seen a recipe here for making it with some kind of white bean or something. I like it spicey with red pepper.

Go out and buy some (I recommend Tribe brand)!! The description doesn't always sound so tasty but it is delish!

I make up fruit cups. I used to buy the ones at the grocery, then DH became interested (Yeh, no more chunky monkey!)

I bought some of those Glad containers and put strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, cantelope and melons.

This with a stick of low fat mozzerella cheese or 24 almonds, give me just the right combo for the mid morning or afternoon snack, and keep me from the slump (dont want swiss family robinson building things on me!)

mmm hummus and tsziki! Both are mediteranian. They have it usually by the deli or deli salad case (step AWAY from the potato salad!!)

it is yummy with any kind of veggie. I make my own now too!

The great thing about hummus and tsziki (yogurt dip) is I feel like I have had a treat, when in fact I have helped my heart with chick peas and yogurt!

Oh, and did I mention they are YUMMY!!

I also found a white bean hummus recipe on line-for those who cant THINK about chick peas!

I tried hummus for the first ever in the last couple weeks...YUMMUS! I get the herbed hummus, haven't taken time to make my own yet but will try that before to long.

    I love black beans but hated the black bean hummus....strange I know....but I am a bit strange..

Ok so I keep hearing the word tsziki being tossed around... ok now I see it's yogurt dip.....so where do I find it in the coop health food section and that's what it's called tsziki?

    Thanks:flowerforyou:

ahhh OOPS...I'm reading this thread backwards and now see where you say to find the T stuff. lol thanks

oh that's something I still have to make yet my own pita chips...so simple! just need to do it is all:drinker:
  • love love my own trail mix. the almonds I toss in help fill me until dinner. I actually like to take lo-fat mozerella cheese and whole grain crackers too- It doesnt take too many to take care of that gnawing in my tummy. Plus, reduced fat or natural PB on toast keeps pretty well until I need it, and it definetly fills a hole!

    Here are my favorites:

animal crackers (they make mini ones so you can have like 50 or so of them...for only 120 calories...keeps your hands and your mouth busy!)

    carrots and dip

    cottage cheese

100 calorie packs (although I try to limit them because of all the artificial ingredients and high sugar content in some)

Fiber One bars and toaster pastries

    granola

    craisins (watch that sugar!)

    yogurt

Sugar Free Jello pudding cups (these are a Godsend for anyone with a sweet tooth! only 60 calories!)

    Laughing Cow cheese wedges

    All Bran crackers

    Pringles wheat cracker stix

    low sodium Saltines

    celery and peanut butter

    fresh fruits

string cheese or other single serving cheeses (Land O Lakes and Cracker Barrel both make some yummy options)

I like nuts, quaker rice cakes, apples, air popped popcorn, sugar free jello cups, baked bagel chips, trail mix, carrots. And i tried hummus the other day, it tastes good, i tried the roasted red pepper flavor and it tastes like refried beans. I eat it on my baked bagel chips.
