Hey guys! I'm planning on getting a bike to go to school. The question is, what kind of bike should I get? 1 speed, 21 speed? What's good and what's not?

My only suggestion is to go to a store that specialized in bicycles to buy one, and not to a department store. You're much more likely to get something that was assembled by a knowledgeable person that way.

A good friend of mine owns a bike shop and I recently took my Wal Mart-purchased Mongoose down there to to get a odometer put on with wanting to lose weight so I could see how far I was going, I made the comment that, if I find it enjoyable to ride alot, I would be in for a new seat....he and his wife both said at the same time that I would be in for a new bike, I guess those bikes are made to look durable, but, in the long run, aren't. I havent run in and bought the $700 bike yet, but just my 2 cents!

I just bought myself a "SPECIALIZED" Crosstrail. It's a hybrid bike that can be used on trails(no stump trails) and the road, so the best of both worlds.. I plan to use it on dirt paths eventually, right now I've been riding on the road with it. They are a good manufacturer, one of the top I think. You can google them and check out their website.

Good luck! Oh and I agree definately go to a bike shop to get some sound advice.
