OK kids. HRM's. Talk to me about them.

What do they do?

What don't they do?

What are the best ones?

Where can I buy one?

How much?

What are they? --> A watch-like device, and a chest strap (for the better ones)

What do they do? --> measure your heart rate while working out (many also calculate calories burned, VO2, etc)

What don't they do? --> force you to get your butt off the couch ;)

What are the best ones? --> matter of taste, I have a Polar FT4 (recommended by a friend who teaches Zumba, spin, and other fitness classes)

Where can I buy one? --> store that carry fitness equipment, online (I got mine from Amazon)

How much? --> mine was about $70

    Hope this helps!

  • What are they? They track your heart rate throughout your exercises. I use mine to keep me in my target heart rate range to get the most out of my workout.

What do they do? Some can track your heart rate, whether you are fat burning or cardio improving and can also track calories burned based off your height/weight.

What don't they do? You can buy super fancy ones that do ridculous things or simple ones that are very basic. Some can run reports, etc. Mine is very basic but tracks my last 7 uses.

What are the best ones? I have a Polar FT7. It's waterproof and I can change the battery myself instead of shipping it to the manufacturer.

Where can I buy one? Any sporting good store or running store. Even online.

How much? I paid about $80.00 for my Polar FT7.

I love using it. It's much more accurate then using the treadmill or exercise bike tracker. Mine uses a wrist watch with a chest strap. It's very comfortble and easy to use. Hope this helps!

allows you to more accurately calculate your caloric burn or what 'zones' your heart rate is in during exercise (look that one up)

mine suggests how long to exercise in the week and in which zones based on my height/weight/resting heart rate/and reactive heart rate to different activities/and ultimate goals

doesn't calculate distance traveled w/o the foot attachment

Should get one w/ a chest strap for best accuracy. Mine isn't uncomfortable at all

I got the Polar FT60 for ~$125 from Amazon...love it. You can get basic ones for $50, I paid extra for the bells and whistles.

I have a polar FT7, cost £70 from amazon. And it's worth it's weight in gold. It's comfortable enough to wear for any activity. Measures heart rate and calories burned. It tells you for your height, weight, age and gender what your maximum HR should be. As you're working out it shows a graph of what effect zone you're working in - either fat burn or fitness. At the end of the workout it gives me a log; time spent, calories burned, average HR, maximum HR, how many hours/minutes my HR was in 'Fat burn' zone and how many in 'fitness' It records the log over the last month so you can review your progress. Can also back it up onto computer. It's a fantastic piece of kit and really the only way of accurately logging what you've burnt. Plus most gym machines will instantly detect your monitor and display your HR on the screen. Good luck :)
