Eating away from home

Any tips for eating away from home? Either at restraunts or at friends houses? I'm noticing I'm having lots of slips in these areas and need some inspiration.

At parties I eat whatever in moderation since they're a special occasion, but try to fill up on veggies. At pubs and restaurants I order grilled fish or a veggie burger with a side salad. It's not a big deal to indulge on these occasions once in a while as long as you stay within your calorie restriction or don't go over by too too much.0

- Pick the healthiest option you can find on the menu and take it easy on the side dishes.
- I usually look for something "plain" - like grilled fish, steak, chicken breast (stuffed with something is OK), pork chop etc. This way you can see what you are eating and concentrate on the actual meat, fish etc without too much sauce or extra stuff. Dishes like curries, lasagne, pie, deep fried stuff don't give you that option.
- Leave the bread alone, get salads or veggis with dressing/sauce on the side
- Drink water instead of other drinks, or alternate a higher cal drink with water or soda water.
- If a friend has cooked you dinner and you don't have an option, just watch your portion sizes
- Plan your other meals to account for a few more calories at your meal out
- Skip dessert if you can, share one with a friend or ask for a small piece if a friend has cooked it.
But mostly, don't panic about eating out.... it's part of life for most people.
Learning to pick a healthier choice from the menu is a great life skill, but also - indulging occasionally isn't going to do you any harm.0 -
Thanks for the ideas. I have a 48 hour live in shift I do. I can bring my own food I find being away from home and not having access to my computer so I can log what eat a big problem. I had a lot of slip ups this weekend and monday was that great either. I think maybe I should get a cell phone so I can log food online all the time. It helps me stay accountable to myself.0
