Shocking your system

So I've hit a plateau that has now lasted three weeks. I checked out some posts and found that there are a few things you can do to help with a plateau. (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/20343-how-i-have-avoided-plateauing-length-warning) So I tried changing up my exercise routine first. I went from doing the elliptical everyday to doing the Biggest Loser DVD to doing house work back to the DVD then to doing yard work. But as I said my plateau has remained. Banks also mentioned shocking your system as a method to help with plateaus in his post. So I decided to try that today. And boy did I shock it at my co-workers birthday party this morning. [Butter-rum cake and ice cream, lol.] :blushing: My only question is, now that I've shocked my system with around 400 extra calories of yummy sugary goodness, should I do an extra hard workout today to burn them off, or just do the norm?

i have been in a plateau for a long time, but i do believe the thing that helps me the most and encourages me is to just give my stomach a rest. just fast for the rest of the day. it is really just a few hours. drink lots of water - at least 8 glasses and if you really have to eat something, eat an apple or a couple of strawberries or a whole cucumber or a bunch of radishes. then tomorrow start a new day and i believe you will find one pound loss and this will encourage you to keep going and eating nutritionally. this way you won't beat yourself up emotionally for eating that cake, etc. you had your reward early, now you pay the price, but not in exercise but in just resting that belly.

I don't weigh myself everyday, just once a week, so I'm not sure that one day of fasting would result in any difference on the scale for me.
  • You'd want to just do your normal day, you want to actually go that 400 calories over what you would normally have, else you wouldn't really be shocking your body, would you? It'd just end up the same as every day.

That's what I was thinking.... I just needed some one to say, "Hey its okay to go over today you're shocking yourself." lol.

    Thanks for the help! :flowerforyou:

When was the last time you've just taken a break from all of it? I mean just for a day. It won't hurt you and maybe that will be the shock you need. Then get right back on track and continue on. I once had a trainer who told me to give myself a day off from watching what I was eating and exercising, once a week.

Wow... I just started thinking about it, and I've only taken a break once since I started.
Maybe I should take another one soon lol.
    Thanks for the advice! :flowerforyou:
