good blog post about this little sensitive (for some....) issue.
I know a few people use this stuff in place of sugar for tea's and coffee etc.

Aspartame is really scary. I researched it awhile back and will never in a million years touch it again. *shudder*
It's scary that SO many people in this country drink diet drinks and buy Equal, or Splenda to use at home. It's seriously disturbing stuff.
If you are looking for a calorie-free, white, powdered, sweet substance to add to things, try using stevia. It's an herb that you can grow at home. Or, you can just buy it like I did in a little jar with a little spoon. No side effects, no nasty tumors growing....0 -
Indeed. yet so many peopl scoff down pepsi max and other diet soda like they are going out of fashion...
dont touch the stuff myself.
a half teaspoon of raw sugar in my tea really porbably does nothing .0 -

 I'm going to sip my coffee w/ Splenda and watch with anticipation. :drinker: Thanks for sharing the article OP as some may find it interesting... and if you don't, just move on.0 -
I read about sugar substitues. It said they were made from an ingredient found in insecticide. There are some other sweetners being made with the extract of the Stevia plant found in South America. There is some controversy over it because it's all natural and is taking the spot light away from artificial sweetners. It is also zero calories!
P.S.
Great article! Thanks! And when real sugar is ONLY 11-20 calories and is not a chemical.0 -
do we need zero calorie sweeteners for out hot drinks???
If people are subbing artificial stuff for the real stuff to save calories, how much sugar were people putting in in the first place!!!0 -
personally...if I really need the sugar, I'll suffer the 16 cals per teaspoon consequences for the "real" stuff.0

I'm a fan of the real stuff in moderation. Here's some more fuel for your fire...

The blog post doesn't add anything to the debate. For example:I don’t listen to all the research because inevitably it is always going to differ. For me though, the evidence is clear about one thing – you are putting a chemically altered thing (because we can’t exactly call it food) into your body.
That presumes that all 'chemically altered' things that you consume are bad; not that this chemically altered thing is bad.
Is there any peer-reviewed study or experiment that proves that the bad reputation that low calorie sweeteners have is warranted? I'm not trying to be a troll. I really would like to read it and make a decision about it because of hard science not FUD.
Mideon I respect you a lot so don't take this as a flame or anything.0 -
not at all mate.
thats the attitude i like to see around here. dont take someone's word as truth on anything! always research, only way to form our own opinions on anything really.
just found it an interesting read.0 -
We are all going to die one of these days..we might as well die happily..be it with Sugar, Splenda, Raw Sugar, whatever..I could go on.. oh did you hear cigarettes are bad for you???? and people are still smoking? wow.
Diabetics need their sweets too. I have plenty of family who are..and they drink their diet sodas..and I used to. I cut it out of my whole life. Water for me now. I don't even have sugar right now.
I do like the idea of the raw sugar though anything in it's natural state is beautiful to me. *_*
I don't judge anyone about what they consume. I just think that to whom it may concern. Meaning if I want to drink unsweet tea with splenda in it.. instead of drinking that processed white stuff that is dumped in by the bagful when I go out for a healthy lunch..then I will.
Let people do what they please..remember we just celebrated a holiday that symbolized our freedom to choose.. our form of sweetness! *winks*0 -
"If people are subbing artificial stuff for the real stuff to save calories, how much sugar were people putting in in the first place!!!"
It may be, as in my case, it's got nothing to do with Calories. It has to do with high or leaning that way - Triglycerides. Doc says - bit high, might want to try to lower that. Now when MFP recommends a quota of 30mg - adding 5 with the real stuff quickly puts dents in the quota; especially when virtually every off the shelf food product of any kind is either high sugar or sodium.
If you "are" talking calories it could be more to do with enjoying an odd Soda/Soft drink. Then we are talking 100s not 10s of calories.
PS For the record I weaned myself off sweetened tea/coffee & don't miss it now. Though will admit to Stevia for Milo :O
PSS @Em "Is there any peer-reviewed study" kudos - yup concur - I fell into the same trap awhile back on an article refuting global warming LOL Turns out the bloke who wrote the article had high credentials *in another & totally unrelated expertise*0 -
Sugar is sugar. Artificial sweeteners make the body believe it is getting sugar when it is not. Damaging to your bodily functions at all?
Fat is fat. Without it, we cannot create the insulation our bodies need to recover, nor receive energy when it is not available in the body.
Carbs are carbs. Without those, we cannot create the most readily available energy source, ATP. If we deplete carbohydrates, ketones will run in our bloodstream and eventually kill us.
Protein is protein. We need it to build our cells - literally.
The war on food will never end, so long as we try to keep cheating ourselves out of the nutrients we need.0 -
ahh the flaming fire i was looking for.
haha.
i'm not trying to tell people what to consume by the way. (how could i? - i dont listen to anyone else, lol.)
Just putting a point of view forward.
I like seeing differing people's responses. is interesting.
choose what you will people. just sharing my view on it all.0 -
Oh, no fire here! No worries.0
