I did over 100 pushups on Monday and P90X plyo on Tuesday, I wanted to do a chest and shoulders work out today but my chest is so sore from all of the push ups, I decided to do Cardio. I am still sore, so my question is. "is it better to wait till all the soreness is gone or is okay to work it out with soreness? How much rest do my muscles need?

i do zumba personally and they have a little booklet that comes with personalized routine days, and it says never do the same things two days in a row. you have to give your muscles time to heal.0

At least 24 hours rest, up to 72 hours - after that, detraining starts to occur where, because you haven't worked them again, your body decides it no longer needs to keep the adaptation you asked of it.0

My trainer doesn't let me work the same muscle group twice in a 5 day period. So if I do chest on Monday, can't do it again until Saturday. There are lots of muscle groups in the body.... go pick on a diff body part, and let the abused muscles heal up.0

Me personally, I listen to my body. If my muscles are screaming at me for a week, I rest for a week. I'd rather take a week off than 4-6 because I injured a tendon or pulled a primary muscle or tore something. If I'm sore but my muscles are "telling" me that they can handle more abuse after a day or two, then I'll work out. I just pay really close attention to how I feel and what seems right for that particular day.
2 weeks ago this coming Monday, I did my first pump class. I couldn't move for days. My legs were fatigued, tired, and extremely sore. I didn't work out again until Thursday night. Even then I was still very very sore but the fatigue was gone so I knew I wasn't over-doing it at that point - even if it didn't feel good in the moment to use those muscles again. I ended up being in alot less pain by Sunday.
Because of the holiday weekend, I haven't worked out again until today, but I'll work out tomorrow night, possibly early Friday morning and hopefully through the weekend as well. Pump is on Monday again - I may be taking Tuesday & Wednesday off again if I'm anywhere near as bad as I was after the first class. I'm a huge proponent of listening to what YOUR body needs and not what everyone else says. They aren't living in your skin and no one knows what's right more than you do.
At least, that's my opinion. :-)

Oh, and I do pretty total fitness workouts - pump is everything, hip hop hustle & zumba are obviously dance based so also use everything.... so, I don't do isolated workout like others were implying above. Maybe that's part of the difference too.0

At least 24 hours. Then see how you're feeling. I got some kind of kink in my left glute, so I didn't work out this morning...it already feels better. Depending on how it feels I may do a little this afternoon. Take care of yourself!!! That's more important than Green Team winning the challenges!0
