In the past, when I was thin and worked out a lot, I had a very irregular cycle (even missing months all together).

I would make an appointment with a gynocologist. Sounds like a problem to me.

I would check with your doctor, but you might be at too low of a body weight, which can cause you to miss and/or stop your period. This is something that I have read in Self magazine, so it’s definitely not as good as getting a doctor’s opinion. I hope you can find the right answer.

This is quite common, but not necessarily healthy. I would call your OB/GYN. This happened to my sister and she has been without a period for over 3 years now. Probably won't pose a problem unless you are planning on getting pregnant in the future.

Mine has not been right either since I started loosing weight. I know I really should go see a dr. about it, if it is possible you should too!

Mine always comes about a week early now, even though I'm on BC...I would definitely see or call your gyno. It's better to be safe and be proactive!

i wouldn't freak out just yet... if you call the doctor and say your period is a week late they'll ask if you took a pregnancy test and likely tell you to wait it out.

when i started all this and made all the adjustments... mine was 12 days late.

Estrogen comes from body fat. If your body fat percentage is too low, your period will be irregular or absent. This is one possible cause. Always a good idea to get a checkup.

This can be due to a lack of body fat. The body will try not to allow pregnancy if you do not have the physical resources to protect that pregnancy. Also, any large weight adjustment causes a shift in hormones, because estrogen release is partially based on your fat cells. When you lose a large amount of weight, estrogen automatically declines.

If you stop losing this weight at a healthy weight, once your body adjusts to the new amount of hormones, you should return to normal.

Another reason for lack of menstruation after weight loss is poor nutrition, related to a lack of iron, zinc and lack of healthy dietary fats.

Missing periods/ no periods is a side effect of anorexia. Therefore it follows that if you are restricting your food intake/ working out a lot more there will be a knock on hormonal effect which may result in late periods/ cycle adjustment. If you go an see the doctor, they'll probably just tell you that.

Unfortunately, mine have started coming a week early which is a bit of a bummer, and my skin has also turned all greasy and spotty like it was when I was a teenager (I'm 38 now and way too old for spots), so there's obviously something hormonal going on with me too.

With any weight loss plan or change in routine, your menstrual cycle is bound to change. Being a week late could simply be chalked up to a result of changed habits/health. However, if you have a low fat percentile, late periods can provide warnings that there is something serious wrong and you risk becomming infertile. If you are hesitant to see a doctor, remember that you can also simply place a call and ask if your situation is worth looking into. If you feel that it is truly serious, then schedule an appointment; just to get checked out. Only you know what is up with your body.

It's relatively normal, but yeah, still not good. I think I saw that it can cause early osteoporosis. I'd call the doctor but he/she may recommend less activity and/or more food and body fat and you should probably listen if that's what he says...

It's a normal body response for female athletes... but they're usually marathon runners... gymnasts. It will come back... but you should consider seeing an OBGYN. It could be a sign of other problems.

Take a pregnancy test to be sure. But my period changes for ANY reason. If I start exercising it changes if I stop it changes. If I'm stressed it changes. If I alter my diet in some way it changes. So yeah. Could be.
  • Not that I'm a "Smaller girl already in the healthy weight region" BUT the same thing happend to me a couple of years ago when I started working out 3 days a week and eating better. I was very surprised at how my body reacted. I didn't get a period for 4 months and my hormones were out of control. I actually gained 5 lbs istead of losing. I went to the doctor and they told me to either wait it out (I've seen other people post this already) or she gave me the option of going back on birth control, which I did and everything is fine now.
My doctor wouldn't acknowledge that it's from beginning a healthy lifestyle... I think that any change in diet or excersize after not being active can throw your body off.. whether you're a healthy weight or not. Since then I've lost about 20 lbs. 5 more to go and I'll be at a healthy weigh according to my bmi! :)
I know how it feels though. I felt like there was something wrong with me. Everything will be fine!

I had/am having this problem. It is nothing to be alarmed about, but i would make an appt to go see your doctor in the next week or two. And be very honest about what you are eating, how much you exercise, etc. I was changed to a different birth control to help regulate it, it took a few months but it came back, and just being reassured by my doc was a huge relief!

Agreed. You've stated you're in a healthy range, so why are you trying to lose?

This can be one of the signs of too few calories. Many anorexic ladies deal with this. We are not qualified to say, but an open, honest talk with a doc is in order. Best wishes. We are rooting for you. It is fixable, no doubt.

Periods are temperamental. A lot of things can trigger them becoming irregular, weight loss is just one of them. Being late or missing a period doesn't sound like anything to worry about to me unless you've got other symptoms if it. I go months without periods and there's absolutely nothing wrong with me!

Though it's already been said, but loss of period is a sign of anorexia. But it could also be due to hormonal changes, body weight changes, etc. You should see your OBGYN and have a sit down with your doctor.... It could be nothing, or it could be something. Better be safe than sorry.

I'm on BC and have been regular for the past few years; however, I started spotting two days ago and my period is supposed to start late Sat./early Sun. I'm going to wait it out to see how it goes... A few years ago when I wasn't on BC and I started exercising and eating healthy, I dropped about 15 lbs. and my cycle changed. Nothing was wrong; sometimes it's normal, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

You can get $1 pregnancy tests at Dollar Tree - sometimes they have them up at the registers (I guess bc people steal them?)

I'd take one just to rule that out! You've gotten some good advice already. :)
