just curious- what do you think is the more accurate depiction of the calories you burn?

and for those who do have a HRM, does it calculate more or less calories burned than the machine says?

  • I found the HRM and the treadmills i run on at the gym and my work gym are not too far off. I know a lot of people have seen huge differences. I see a pretty big difference on the elliptical though, I never burn as many cals as those machines say i do.

Machines are in my experience very inflated. I use my HRM to gage my burn, despite what a machine may say

I was wondering about that too. My heart rate monitor shows less calories burned then the machines at the gym. The machines pick up my heart rate when I wear the monitor, but the calorie counts are never the same. I always go with what my HR monitor says.

Treadmill is always higher tan my HRM by about 30%. Elliptical is off by even more.

the machines at the gym are way more than what my HRM says. You dont know if the machines's settings were from another user and they might also need to be recalibrated

yep I'm with the rest of you... just got my HRM and found treadmill is at least 100-150 over it on calories, more for longer than 30 mins... gonna chart it one of these days to see avg percent or whatever. I use my phone camcorder to record machine results so I have record of it, HRM stores info. I'm a bit of a computer geek. :)
