I'm a huge skim milk drinker and have been thinking of trying almond milk. I've seen a few people on the boards who have suggested it. Anyone else tried it and what do you like/dislike? Any info would be helpful!

Thanks!

I have both because I like skim milk better w/ some things, but when I don't wan that specific milk taste (like with a low cal cookie... or even something a bit sweet... or with cereal) almond milk is a great substitute that is lower in calories and higher in calcium and it gets the job done. I made a chicken stew the other night that called for reduced fat milk. I went with skim because I was after an exact taste. Almond milk is a bit sweeter and a bit thicker, in my opinion. Almond milk is not bad at all and it lasts for a much longer time than regular milk or skim milk. So, it is not like you have to drink it all really fast.

EDIT: And it is really good with cereal. That is my fav/most common thing to have it with. I love reg. milk, but I don't miss it at all!

I have made the switch from skim to almond & I like it. No, it isn't the same as good ol' cows milk (which I LOVE), but I have found the unsweetened Almond Breeze to be a good substitution. It is great in cereal & I have been cooking with it as well. No complaints so far.

I like the unsweetened vanilla almond milk, just keep in mind that almond milk has next to no protein/serving whereas skim milk has 9 grams/serving. If you are getting enough protein making the switch is fine, but if you count on milk to get protein, don't switch, maybe just try it as a treat.

I tried Silk Vanilla flavored Almond Milk this morning for the first time and I'm glad I didn't waste my money on a whole carton. Some like it but I thought it was pretty gross. Skim milk for this girl (and on occasion the heavenly full fat whole milk, yum!)

    I do! I do!
I'm lactose intolerant (apparently I was diagnosed as a kid but I didn't really figure it out until a few weeks ago...Thanks MOM!) Anyway, as a kid the texture of milk freaked me out, but almond milk is totally different. I think its delicious, I like the texture, I drink it, I use it in everything. The texture is totally different when you drink it than milk, esp skim milk, its creamier and just different. I freaking love it.

As others have said-there's not a whole lot going on in it nutritionally speaking but it's my favorite of the "milks"

On the other hand, if you're looking to reduce sugar... unsweetened almond milk is awesome. No lactose, no other sugars. I only use milk in cooking and coffee, and am loving the ability to keep my sugar levels down since I switched.

I love my almond milk. I cook with skim. Almond is much healthier. Good luck in your changes.

I love cow's milk, but I have tried both soy and almond milk when I was nursing my youngest son with a dairy sensitivity. I like the taste of almond milk (not so much for soy) but I switched back to skim milk. Mostly because I'm trying to eat whole foods (closest to how they are found in nature) and I just don't understand how they "milk" almonds. lol I think people say that it's healthier because it's slightly lower in calories (don't quote me as I haven't compared for myself), but I don't believe being lower in calories automatically makes something better for you. :)

I will drink both. I have gotten both the Diamond brand and Silk Almond milk and they are both pretty good. The only thing about almond milk that I don't like is that the protein is only 1 gram, whereas skim milk might be 8-10 grams of protein.

Calorie wise depending on what you get in almond milk, it could be a lot less. Anywhere from 40-90 calories depending on whether you get unsweetened or sweetened.

Thanks for the links! I still have my doubts about commercially available almond milk, but I have plenty of doubts about commercially available cow's milk also. I think I'm going to try making my own almond milk now, so again... Thank you for the info! :)

Almond milk is delicious. I think it is much better than skim milk.

Silk PureAlmond unsweetened is great, as well as the dark chocolate (if you have the extra calories). Also Almond Breeze makes an unsweetened chocolate that is very nice.

    blessings.
