stubborn friend and weight loss

I have a friend here at my work, we started dieting together and we lost around 17 pounds each in the beginning with my knowledge from this website and the great opinions on here, but now she is really frustrated because she has not lost weight in like 3 weeks....well ummmm try not to eat only 500 calories a day! Youre body is starving!

She always asks me for advice on how to get out of her plateau and I tell her very nicely and informatively to eat atleast 1,200 cal a day, but she never listens and quietly blames me that I dont fix her problem for her. If she listened to me a little more then progress would be made, but there are some people you just can't get out of that mentality of the 'starve yourself and you'll lose weight' mode that society has formed in their minds. : (

I just feel like she isn't ready to lose weight because she just seems so stubborn. And I don't know what to do, because I don't want to give up on her and she started at almost 160 and got down to her CW of 141 but wants to get down to 130 (she's 5'3" like me).

Please give me your opinions on what you might say or do in my situation. It would mean the world to me : )

Wow, that's crazy. I'm the same size and I eat twice as much as her and lose weight. Now that I'm at my goal weight I will be able to eat about 1800 cals a day. Maybe you can suggest to her to eat every 3 hours and include carbs protein and fat with each meal.

maybe just print her out some of the great posts on here about starvation diet! there's some tacked to the forums (I think under the general weight loss help one) other than that... lead by example!

stubborn people are just annoying :) but you're a good friend to be so concerned!! best you can do is try, though - it's up to her to take the right steps.

We can lead a horse to water. I think that we have been conditioned to eat less..we will lose weight. The concept of eating no less than 1200 calories..AND eating back our exercise calories is a fairly new concept to alot of us. You were smart in signing up for this site..since it has so much to offer as far as advice.

Next time she asks you, I would just say to join MFP..and ask the forums..gets you off the hook

This is a great idea. There are many threads and success stories on here from women the same size as your friend, myself included. Feel free to use my success story and journey to show your friend too. They are linked below my ticker. I certainly did not lose weight by starving myself or doing some crazy low cal diet. I just posted a tip to my MFP friends today about this dangerous practice of eating too few calories. It sounds crazy, but you do need to eat more to lose more. Good luck to you and your friend. I hope she sees the light!!!
  • Thank you guys for all your input!

i will definitely show her all the results of people that entered starvation mode, i hope that these things will make a difference to her, I just am nervous that she lost her drive to do better. i wish she was interested in this website as all of us are, I talk about it constantly and how much i really love going on, she used to log her calories in the beginning on the phone app, and stopped as quickly as she started.

And out of her desperation of the scale not moving, she started taking diet pills (the 'quick' fix) to solve her problems and now she is a jittery mess AND the scale isn't moving. Oh and p.s. the pills are appetite supressants too...
Ill have to get those forums about diet pills now too lol

But i am so thankful that I have an outlet to these problems thanks to you guys. i literally was at a stand still with not knowing what to do :)
