Ive been good so far, lost 8 pounds since joining MFP only 3 and a half wks ago, feeling a little better. However a health issue (won't bore you with the details) has come back to haunt me and left me in agony, so depression has set in and the comfort eating started. Now I feel guilty. And I'm still in pain. I don't want to undo what I have done so far and put the weight back on but Im not sure how to stop comfort eating as its the only thing that helps (albeit very temporarily) and im really miserable.

Anyone have times like this? What do you do? Any suggestions??

Walking does wonders for me when having down days...I'll try to do yoga once in a while, and that also calms my emotions as well..if you feel like eating, try sugar free gum, take a hot bath, listen to some music..usually that tends to help me..maybe a movie with low cal popcorn. :)

    You bet hon!
Depression based comfort eating is tough - but I forced myself to do something else... This might sound crazy, but I started small...
instead of chips - I did edemame (Soy beans) or frozen green beans that I heated until just warm but still crunchy...
I would go to the gym at REALLY odd hours to work out so no one else was around...
I made myself go get a venti skinny vanilla latte (160 calories) and sit and read a book and MAKE myself take my time on drinking it... (that made me get out of the house, be around others <sort of> and control how much I ate)...

All of those little things helped - plus working out fights off depression - its REALLY hard to start, but it helps SOOO much...

Let me know if you want help - I'll chat to you or motivate you if I can - been there and want to help anyone else who is hurting...

You should fulfill something more important to you. Food won't solve the problem as it tends to be a comfort that only lasts while you're eating it. You should take up an artistic hobby to get your mind off your issues AND of food. It's the best advice I can offer to you. I've had similar problems, but being an artist I can easily distract myself with music, writing, or drawing and be so into it that I'm too lazy to go to the kitchen.

    You will be fine! :flowerforyou:

I know how you feel, i was just getting excited and into everything and i tore my rotator cuff... so now its mostly all up to my diet. More than ever did i just want to say screw it and give up. I figured why eat right if i can't exercise? well the answer is, because i want to lose weight! I want to be healthy! I don't want to gain more and not be able to play with my future kids! That is what kept and still keeps me going. Good luck :)
  • YES!!! Been there and I have just started the program about 3 weeks ago too!!! But when I get the urge to comfort eat, I get up and get moving, do something else that I know is better for me, and keep drinking more and more water ...:) Keep your head up
