Self induced plateau

It's true. I've been at the same weight for three months. As soon as I'm about to break into another level of weight loss, I eat donuts, oreos, cinnamon rolls, or something stupid. It's like I don't want to give it up, but making a few different choices a week will make the pounds start to shed again. Basically I'm maintaining instead of losing, but still need to lose a good 40-50 pounds. Sometimes it's just one too many cheats and I know the scale will show it. It's so damn hard to walk past certain things at the store, even knowing how hard my workouts are, how hard it is to burn a lousy 300 calories, and how three tiny cookies puts that right back on.
Does it sound familiar? What can I do to break these habits and push through the next level?

Hi! It sounds very familiar :blushing:
I think taking it one day at a time is critical and also remember that if you gain some weight quickly after a "splurge" then it's likely to come off quickly as well. You could ramp up the exercise when you get towards your "plateau threshold". I did that recently and it really paid off for me but it took 2 weeks for me to see it on the scales.
I wish you all the best - I'm sure you will get through it!!

just remember that once you lose the 40-50 pounds you can eat that stuff and maintain! That's what I have to keep reminding myself of. You aren't alone.0 -
I totally do this. When I've done well suddenly I go on a binge, annoying.0

That's where the will power kicks in...HOW BAD do you want it?
It's hard no doubt, and a cheat meal or two won't hurt during the week in my opinion....but I let those meals happen when someone else is doing the cooking or buying dinner LOL. Keep to the outer edge of the grocery store, and you're good to go!0 -
Yep I'm terrible for my binges & once i've had one thing I think well the damage is done now and have a few more (terrible I know!), best advice is to not keep anything in the house like that and eat nice big healthy meals so you don't get that craving! Tis easier said than done though - I know!0

But of course eating junk food is not good for me calories or not, and junk food encourages overeating because I will feel hungrier on junkfood than healthy food.0 -

Uhh... no you can't. :noway: You do not maintain weight loss (and healthy eating habits) by going back to the same old crap that got you fat to begin with... that's not the way maintenance works... sorry to burst your bubble!0 -
Maybe you need to tell your brain that these foods are not "off limits", but rather are your "party foods"". That's what my children and I decided. We went through the house and thew out a bunch of stuff, figured out what we could do to replace (frozen fruit bars instead of ice cream for example) and decided that when we would eat the not-so-healthy stuff, it would be our "party foods", when we were over someone's house, picnic, party, away from the house. And even then, only ONE serving of it. But I find for me, as soon as I tell my body something is "off limits", suddenly I crave it. Then when I eat it, I overeat it because I tell myself this is the last time I am ever going to eat it (until my next splurge). So as I have started telling myself that nothing is off limits, but rather some foods are small portions than others, I find that my control is a lot better. Don't know if this helps or not.0

@ Tony Robbins: Food addiction laughs in the face of will power. Be warned, it will only get you so far. If you've eaten yourself to obesity and haven't dealt with root causes, you can easily slide back up, will power or not.
@ Candi: That has been my excuse too. I figured out a maple bar is 400 cals, so I work out and eat one. For some reason, a calorie is not always a calorie, and my body always wants more donuts. I'm trying to explore whether it's about "fear of giving up donuts" or "fear of being skinny."0
