Why am I so apprehensive???

Options
Last month I went to play competitive badminton with a friend. I was doing it as a way to add in different excercises to my routine. I was going to the gym 4 days a week doing weight and cardio. While we were playing a quick pick up game after warming up I went for a shot and twisted and my left knee came out of socket and all the muscles/ligaments were injured. I've been on crutches since and have had an MRI. I won't get the results for another 2 weeks. I've had a knee injury before and am familiar with what physio to do. I'm working on getting it stronger.
The problem is I haven't been able to go to the gym since. It's been over 5 weeks now. I have decided to go back this coming Monday (i'm out of town for the weekend) and I'm nervous about it. Worse than I was the first day I went. Why? I really miss going but now the thought of going brings up feelings of dread!
Is this normal, how do I get past it? Help!

This happened to me when I injured myself skating. Really screwed up my hamstrings. I think you are worried about injuring yourself further (though it may not be conscious). It's something you're just going to have to force yourself to do. Maybe try some light exercises at home to work yourself up.

Did they have to send the scans to another doctor by Pony Express? I have never heard of an MRI taking so long to be read... ever. That's ridiculous.

If you are injured, your doctor should be advising you on your exercise routine... not mfp. I've had 3 knee surgeries on my left (meniscus repair and an ACL reconstruction) and I would definitely look to my physician for guidance.

The joys of the NHS. It took me 2 1/2 weeks to just get an MRI appointment! The doctor I am seeing is a specialist who is in the hospital on Fridays only so I've got the first available. I've tried to call and speak to him but it's not possible.

I am not asking for an exercise routine, just wondering if feeling this apprehensive is normal.

Injury is always hard to deal with, especially when exercise is such a big part of your life. However injury is something that is always present as a possibility. I don't know why you feel so aprehensive but it is perfectly normal that you're not as confident after a rather serious injury, the good part is that after a couple of days in the gym you'll be back to your old self and will forget all about it pretty soon and start enjoying your exercise routines all over again.

It will go, you just need a little push past the first hurdle, its like the first time you got the runners on and went for a jog... the hardest part was lacing the shoes, once you're out is all fun and games.

    To a speedy recovery!

Thanks! I just thought I was being a big ole weeney about it. It's good to know I am 'normal'? It will be a very slow process to get back to where I was but I will get there in the end!

I think I would be apprehensive in your position, so it's totally understandable. FWIW and as your friend here on MFP, I think you've coped marvellously since your injury and I would keep all those achievements at the forefront of your mind to hopefully chase away the nasty demons come Monday!

I've had problems with my left knee since sophomore year in high school. After injury and reinjury and then reinjury again over the last 12 years I was and am more apprehensive about the type of physical activity I do. I have no problem jogging but playing competitive sports (basketball, pick up football, tennis, racquetball, etc) really worries me. My knee just never has been the same and healed to where it was before. I wear a brace working out and am conscious of it every step I take running so bouncing all over the court makes me very apprehensive as well as doing hardcore workouts like Insanity. I fear reinjury and the setbacks that brings along with further damage. I understand how you feel. Get back in the gym and do cardio, but maybe avoid racquetball until you feel stronger and are sure of your ankle strength.
