Loose skin and losing alot of weight

After I had lost 128 pounds I didnt like the loose skin I was having. I read an article that said sometimes its good to take some time off from losing and concentrate on toning and maintaining and skin will take care of itself. By no means did I get perfect with it but it did make a huge difference. I maintained for 10 weeks and worked out hard and ate all my calories to maintain. This is something that worked for me and I thought I would share.

Thanks for this! I'm still going to be checking out the surgery, but assuming my insurance won't cover it, this will be a good thing to try in the mean time.0

Weight lifting and diet really help with skin elastacity. But good information.0

Thanks for sharing. I guess I will stop complaining about my super slow weight loss the last 6 months. Maybe I am saving myself from saggier skin…giving it a chance to catch up.0

You saw a difference that quickly? I've been maintaining four months and wasn't 'that' big in the first place and i'm noticing it now more than ever! Oh dear...0

Actually had a really good article written by a PhD on this, on another thread.
Take the back of your hand, pinch some skin together. That's what loose skin looks like. It's very thin - no subcutaneous fat.
If you have loose tummy skin; the reason it's hanging is because you have burned connective tissue - so the fat that is left, is making the skin sag. You need to lose more weight!! Then, the connective tissue will pull the skin back, and the skin will shrink.
Exercise is part of the solution - and diet. As you lose that fat that is making the skin sag - the skin will pull itself back against your body. Surgery is usually both unnecessary and expensive. Our bodies are amazing things. Don't take my word for it; look at the women who have had multiple kids, lost in excess of 100+ lbs and look at how well they have done. It's amazing!!0 -
Great advice! Thanks!0

Thanks heaps for sharing
I found this blog online - Rob Former Fat Guy, he's been on an interesting journey and no longer has loose skin at all as well (just to link it to this post)0 -
Great to know - I worry about loose skin as probably most people do on here so it's good to know there are options other than surgery...0

Double oh dear! lol
I have a connective tissue disorder... it's defective at best, guess i'll have to get used to my jiggly *kitten*! As for losing more weight... don't think it's healthy for me at this weight and BF%... but great info, thank you!0 -

Hmmm....I wish I could say I've had the same experience. It took me 4 years to lose all my weight (granted there was a pregnancy in there) and I still have loose skin in my tummy. HOWEVER, I will say that over this last year of maintaining it has improved dramatically and it is becoming more and more apparent that I need to lose more fat.0

loose skin is one of those things you are going to have if you come from a higher weight. coming down from 285 I know i will have some in my stomach because of how bad my stretch marks are (most are 6-8 inches long) my brother is down 175lbs from 440 and you can see he will more than likely have to have surgery due to the amount of loose skin (maybe 15lbs of it)
Even if we had taken an whole extra year it would not have helped because the skin was stretched beyond repair.0 -
i am SO scared of extra skin. i try to exfoliate, use lotions, eat "clean", drink lots of water and stuff, but i have no idea if it's going to make a difference. i know being a healthy weight is more important than the skin, but it's still something that (literally) gives me nightmares :frown:0

I have to say i'm 80lbs down and started toning/working out in the last 6 weeks. I don't think it will make much difference to my skin as i've had 3 very large babies and gone from almost 9 stone over weight to having just around 3st to get to goal. Loose skin will always be an issue for me, how we handle it mentally is what interests me a lot...0

I've lost a total of 85lbs. I've kept it off goin on for 3 years. I am currently tryin to reach 135lbs which is a loss of 10lbs. I have loose skin and have been dealing with it for the past 3 years. I've done everything I can physcally do to get rid of it. My only option is a tummy tuck. Good luck to all!0

Cheeky i wrote a blog post about that a while ago. They are in away a reminder ove where i have been and where i will never go again. In your case they are different. my wife got hers after having our son and she sees them as a price she paid to have a beautiful little boy.0

I have to say although i love my 3 children i hate my stretchmarks, they are however a part n parcel of life.
I also have a 8 inch scar down my tummy (from my RNY surgery) that i wear as a badge of honour kind of. That surgery gave me the chance to live my life. It's made me a mum who can enjoy her children and her grandchildren.
All of these things will stop me from ever going back to where i started. I may not be Cinderella but i am darn well going to the ballxx
