Lowest Blood Pressure Ever

A little background…

High block pressure runs in my family. Sometime in 2007, I was diagnosed with HBP (180/100) and my doctor told me if things don't change I would risk kidney failure. So I changed my diet, worked out and did a lot of jogging. Even set a goal for myself to do a half marathon…which I completed in 2009. At that time my BP was down to 117/75 which made my doctor (and me) very happy.

Since then I have slacked off a little as I was in more of a “maintenance mode”. I gained a little weight back (about 15 lbs) but my BP was still in a normal range (120-130/80ish). Then I found MFP and decided to give it a try. Well I have since lost those 15 lbs with the help of MFP tracking my intake and exercises. Yesterday I thought to myself “Self, it has been a while since you checked your blood pressure”. So I pulled out the handy home BP monitor. I was actually a little worried that since it has been close to a year since I checked that I might be in for a rude awakening. Well a couple of seconds later, it gave me my reading….

107/70 with a heart rate of 50

WOW! That is the lowest it has ever been. I tested it again about 5 minutes later to make sure, and the reading was 111/72 with a heart rate of 52. I am very happy indeed!!!

awesome! just make sure you get it calibrated so that its reading correctly...automatic cuffs get off track pretty easily and often. Congrats thats an amazing bp!!

High BP is the reason I dropped 40 lbs (and counting) and found MFP. What kind of home BP monitor do you have?

Way to go Homer. When first diagnosed mine was 200/164. The doctor said I could have a stroke any minute. I've been on meds and got it under control. Since I've lost weight, I monitor it myself and it has been 100's/high 60's. He has me splitting my pill now and thinks another 30 pounds lost and I'll be off them altogether.
  • excellent job!! :)

Awesome! Its time I get serious. I'm sick of the BP meds I'm on and all their stupid side effects. I KNOW dropping weight will lower it but I keep messing it up. I don't know what is wrong with me. Now my newest dose causes so much anxiety I actually get panic attacks. They've checked my heart with worry but it seems to be fine just plain old panic attacks happening. I'd just like to get off the meds and have it normal. Mine is worrisome to Dr's because its runs 140-150/90's funny thing is with my prior dosages it was the same. I'd find it was the same with or without the meds so at several points I took myself off them. I don't like taking meds not even ibuprofen. I'm weird like that.

I'd like to run but at my weight it would be dangerous to my body so biking, swimming and walking will have to be a good news start to exercise, along with my dvds of course.

Way to go lowering the BP.

So awesome! Those numbers can be very worrying. :frown: Most people don't know what a silent killer high Bp can be. I'm hoping that by losing the weight my BP and heartrate will be that low naturally too. Right now, I take meds for BP, not because it was particularly high, but becauase the weight I'm carrying has caused my heart to work too hard, resulting in reversable ischemia [heart doesn't get quite enough oxygen]. My blood pressure was relatively low before 110/70, but my heart rate was around 72, which, while not particularly awful, is not great. On meds it's 59 with a Bp that's borderline too low, but I've gotten used to it. I've been working out on the elliptical to keep my heart healthy and pain free and it's been SO worth it. I've actually grown to look forward to it, knowing that if I use it regularly my chest won't hurt! Now to get the weight off and hopefully reverse the effects of and maybe even the condition of heart disease.

Congrats! I too was diagnosed with HBP last year. With the help of MFP and a change in my diet I was able to lose 30 lbs and get off the meds. I constantly monitor my BP at home to make sure its where its suppose to be. :drinker: To your health!

Thanks. That's actually not my lowest heart rate. The lowest was 36 in the height of my half marathon training. All that running really help keep my resting heart rate low.

I forget the exact brand, but it was just a simple one I picked up at Walgreens. It has a memory so I can go through the history of my tests.
